“Black Madeira” from Madeira Island Portugal

Thanks for your input, Timo.

I have grafted Violeta on a sucker of an adult tree. It's only a sucker, but the tree has more than 30 years, so it can benefit from part of the good root system and has lots more energy to grow than usual.
I don't think it's comparable with grafting on a cutting, even a good variety that roots and grows well.

Grafting directly on an adult tree has given me even better results in terms of speed of production (i had cuttings producing figs 5 months after being grafted) and overall aspect of the cultivars grafted, maybe this extra energy can explain, in part, why the graft of Violeta thinks its an older tree ;.)

An example...

This cutting of Negronne was grafted in March, had is first leafs in April and has figs in July:

Picked a Yuge one today even though it was not quite ripe. Ants were making a concerted effort to puncture a crack in the side so it was now or never.

Puts on lots of figs, just about a year old, rooted around last December

Woohoo! Beautiful!

Fruit looks delicious. By the distance between the nodes, this tree looks to be a very rapid grower. Congrats on the fruit and tree.

I'd managed to get an air layer of a Black Madeira from a local collector in dec 2016 that mentioned it was from a reliable souce from the US. From Jan until May 2017, the leaves are mostly single lobe or tri-lobe.But ,since May all the new leaves are with 5 lobes only and none are single or tri-lobe.as it is already fruited now, guess it will take another 3 months to see whether it is a genuine Black Madeira or not.

Is this the one Justcare24 is selling on ebay as madiera island black?

The collector didn't get it from ebay but directly from his source in the USA, but he can't disclose the name perhaps due to it is his personal trading contact.Bought a galicia negra air layer as well from him(which also he got from the same source) and it is ok

This is my best tasting fig so far. My tree is on it's second leaf and the fruit is getting really good. The tree made it through the 20 degree winter with zero die back. It's a very healthy, vigorous variety. It's a 10 for sure. I got my first ripe fig on August 1st.

I guess I should mention, this is KK's "Madeira Island Black". Thanks KK!

My "Madeira Island Black" cuttings came from a guy far, far away. I received 5 healthy long cuttings. I cut them in half. 9 rotted, 1 rooted. That said, the cuttings from my trees are not particularly hard to root. Maybe his cuttings were old or maybe I got better or luckier.

Thank you
I've had pretty good success with cuttings in California so I'm willing to try just 1 of this variety .
If you have 1 for sale

  • vb

you have quite a reputation on this forum so if I ever get my hands on this variety it has to be KK
