It's very tasty fig indeed... I have sampled it at UCDavis and was excellent, I got a tree here will see how it does. Jon said that his was slow grower... 

I've got one, but it won't fruit this year. I  would love for this fig to have a name and some background history. Mine is growing pretty well this season. I rooted it last year. It didn't grow much during it's first season. The photos I've seen have a med-large green to gold fig with a strawberry jam-looking inside. The best info I was able to get  last year described it as "One of the better numbered figs".  Here's some more info from other sites:

Yes, I have it growing in my orchard in Charlotte.  It is a slow grower but does produce some awesome figs for our area.  Figs at UC Davis were excellent as well.

it seems lot of figs are doing rather well in NC. too bad so many good figs are slow growers. i hope the cuttings will survive this year and i'll get to taste some of them by next year.

i have a big plan once i have enough figs in my collection :)

Anyone try this and a Bataglia Green?  Any comments?  is the 187-25 early?  Sensitive to rain?

Pete, I started my collection back in 2005 when I bought my house. I had figs before and bought some of Ray Given 's fig tree back when he was selling them in the 90's. I just started out with a few trees and when I found one that I like, I tried to get more of that one fig like, Smith, O'Rourke, Mission, Engliish Brown Turkey, Tacoma Violet, Stella, Atreano, Gino's, and the list goes on and on.

There are so many varieties that grow very well in NC. You'd be surprised. I think if you have the right combination of soil, lime, fert, and temperature....you can grow many different figs here. I have over 70 figs in my orchard. But my container fig garden is really starting to show some nice thickness and size. I have one called Chico Strawberry aka Saratoga, that I've had in a pot for 3 years. Last year, I got 2 weird looking figs from this tree. They werent worth eating. Today, it has 3 nice thick main trunks and lots of figs. I can't wait to try them this year.

70 is a lot. I only 34 plants, and I'm worried what I'm going to do this winter. Good number of them are duplicates. I'll probably end up giving good number of them away before the winter.

I did find good soil mix and fert that works for me. I'm just concerned all these UCD plants will die on me like they did for lot of the forum members.

It takes good 2-3 years to get figs off the tree, and to end up with dead trees seems like a lot of investment for very small return...

As it is, my two car garage has my wife's car, my john deere, '66 Vespa SS 180 (in pieces... I'm waiting to strike rich so I can fully restore it), basketball hoop... once I put in my three 10 gal... number of 1 gal... it's almost impossible to move around in there. My truck stays outside... maybe I'll convince my wife to park her car outside... hmm..

Pete, most of your figs should overwinter outside pretty well  in NC after their second season. I urge winter protection for cuttings and plants that are smallish. Of course, your more Mediterranean figs like the Black Madiera will probably never be OK to leave out of doors during the winter unless you live in a place that never freezes. I left my cuttings out last year under black plastic and they survived. We did have a really mild winter, though.

i keep all my figs in container. easier for me to move them around. don't really want to put them in ground. wheather here is good enough, but we still get late frost that damages the leaves and the bud.

Bullet then your good to go  i have 2 cars in garage, one stays put the other gets driven, plus freezer and several outboard motors , cabinet, recycle bin etc.
6 30g pots sit behind 1 car , the rest go on sides of garage and a few on back wall.
Some get stacked between and on the lips of the pots.

187/25 is very late if ever to ripe in NJ zone 7

It ripens up here in Philly, but I keep mine in the garage through the winter and those trees are always faster to produce than in ground

Pete, today I have over 100 trees in 20gallon size pots.  :)  Last year I only had around 50 in 20 gallon pots.  I left my oldest 20gal trees out side all winter long.  I had just about zero die back.  A few tips were burned but nothing major.  I did put some young trees (they were in 20g containers too) inside my garage and yard shed.  But those enclosurers are not heated and they did fine too.  So, this year, I will be leaving just about all my 20gal trees outside without protection except for Black Maderia and a few other prize trees.

My 187/15 did fruit in my area and showing figs today.

you must have some land.. 100 20 gal trees? wow.. nope.. i'm not brave enough to chance my trees to outside during the winter. only have 4 trees giving me figs. maybe when i have enough trees to provide good supply of figs, i'll try leaving them outside :)
