My wife and I were excited to try my first fig grown on cuttings I started back in Jan(gifted by a local forum member). We had been away at a conference for a week, and I had noted the day before leaving home that this fig had enlarged, started a little purple color and turned soft. I was worried while away that the cold PM temps would affect it (about 50 a few nites), or that my neighbor watering my plants would forget. On arriving home at 9:30, I went out with a flash lite and found a soft drooping dark purple fig. I brought it in for a photo op, see below. My wife described the taste as 'fantastic'. I thought it was good, sweet, very juicy, kind of an earthy taste with slight seed crunch (sorry my limited experience crimps my flavor report). I think it was completely ripe based on the lack of latex when removed, and the drooping position. Due to dropping temps tomorrow I was afraid to leave it on the tree. The eye was closed, sorry I missed a photo of it.

This variety, San Pietro (the Joe Morle or JM version), has not been reported on much here. Anyone else with experience? Is this the normal color of interior?

Nice looking fig!  Is San Pietro the Italian equivalent name for San Pedro? 
If so I thought those type of figs (also called intermediate) require pollination to set the second crop? e.g. Desert King and other San Pedro types.

I don't think this is a San Pedro type - the Italian Fig Tree website says 2 crops. I think the name is related to a St Peters day

I have a young San Pietro JM that I planted this past spring in the ground. It has grown well over the course of the summer here in Georgia and bore about a dozen good sized figs of medium quality - not bad for a young tree. I would say this tree is a great investment and I look forward to many years of fruiting from it.

Nice work, Ed. That's a good looking fig, and definitely ripe. Sort of an unusual combination of colors with the purple skin and amber-ish flesh. I know Beall and Wuhan have a similar light on the inside/dark on the outside coloration. I wonder if the flavors are similar.

Ed the color of the interior of your fig is different than mine. It should have a red interior. I don't remember if I gave you cuttings of LSU Purple but that is what the interior looks like although the shape of the fig looks more like San Pietro. Hmmmm
The picture is of a San Pietro fig last year and an older picture of the leaves for comparison.

Thanks for chiming in Tony.  You gave me cuttings of San Pietro and Carini (which did not survive my rookie mistakes), right off the plants when I was at your place.  I did get cuttings of LSU Purple a few months later from Jon (I have one of those that survived, no figs this year), but by that time this one was already rooted, so I don't see how they could have gotten mixed up.  I will try to get photos of the leaves of both of my plants (San Pietro and LSU Purple) posted by Fri eve or Saturday for comparison (schedule busy til then).

Maybe the squirrels peeled off the name stickers and changed them.  One was busy burying black walnuts in my potted figs the past week or so.  I hope I found them all... :)

Congrats on the first fig. I had a black walnut sprout out of one of my pots while still in the garage this early spring. At first I was like.."wow, that is a fast sucker" and then a few days that turned to a Homer Simpson "Doh!".
