1st post+how to test unknown cuttings?

Hi my name is Eli and i am from Israel.
this is my first post , i am starting to test grow some figs in pots cause i live in a apartment building.

i have a question:
about few days ago i was hiking in the banias near the kineret sea in israel and i saw alot of fig trees  growing from the "stones" near the water stream.
anyhow i took some cuttings without knowing what is the taste- all in all it came to 20 cutting.

what is usually done to test cuttings? propagate two-three and save the rest tin the fridge?
how long do they take to bare fruit ?

if there any israeli members here that could share how is the taste of the figs there i would be happy to get the knowledge.
thanks

Greetings and welcome to the FFF forum. Nice that you were out and got some cuttings, many will be jealous of your good fortune.

Here's a good link to get you started: http://figs4fun.com/basics_Propagating.html

I already got caught with cutting from some trees...... funny thing is after i got cought and explained why i took the cuttings i became "friends" with the owners of the trees.

its like once i have been to greece and in each hotel i lived the owner of the hotel told me his wine is the best and gave me a bottle.....

hello Eli and welcome to the forum.
If you live in an apartment it is best to grow at least one of each variety. If it was me I would wait to see how the fig is in summer before I decide if it's a good one or not specially with your limited space. Fig trees that are growing wild in the cracks of the stones are sometimes of the Capri type and don't bear figs. I hope that helps.

Cool project . good luck !

Welcome Elin.

thanks for the welcoming .....

maybe its not good to "gamble" with figs this way  and go the safe way and taste the figs from where i take the cutting first..
but for this i have to wait .......

anyhow thanks all i will try to root the cuttings anyhow and grow 3-4 of them and taste their figs..

thanks

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like a great adventure, any pictures of figs, fig trees, fig growers, fig thieves, LOL are greatly appreciated.  I understand that there are some great figs in Israel.

Welcome!  Let us know how they do for you and show us pictures when they ripen.

Ok
i am also trying to grow some rooted cuttings i took from Caesarea here, i tasted the figs there and they looked small yellowish but very sweet- (they were the last ones maybe....).

i will share my fig encounters more detailed in the future.

forgot to sure the last summer i had bad burns from the sap when i took cuttings of a tree here.
it was very hot and i had big blisters on my arms.

is this normal?

Eli...welcome to the forum and good luck with your cuttings...as far as the burns you received from the sap(laytex), I know that many people get a mild to medium irritation from the laytex when harvesting, but this is the first time I have heard of anyone getting a severe burn from it...maybe the variety that you harvested in Isreal produces a more potent sap than those here...wash the affected area with mild soap and water, and try to prevent infection...if necessary see the doctor.  Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Eli. Where at in Israel are you located? I hope to see more posting from you and would love to see some pictures from around Israel with figs involved. maybe find people that grow them. just a thought.  Take care my friend and long live Israel!

I am located in kiryat Ono- its about 7 miles from tel aviv-- i need to drive all the way to jerusalem to see fig tree in orchards in jerusalem.
untill now i went with my family and took cuttings to see how they come out without tasting from the mother tree.
anyhow its cold here now and in the next few months fruit trees will begin their work and ill start going to these places and documenting some figs from the trees.

BTW how do i post large photos here?
any suggestions?

BTW forever figs i am a medical doctor and at start couldnt find the reason for my burns untill i took cuttings the second time and the same happened after  so one thing lead to another i found
out there is the disease called PPD--phytophotodermatitis- which as in my case shows itself with heavy symptoms especially when very warm.
after some months i was so scared i couldnt touch branches by skin even-i was traumatized.

i heard from my motherr that some people in georgia died from this because they were tol that if they wipe the sap and go to the beach they would get a goos skin......
anyhow i learned my lesson....

first is from the cutting in cesarea and second is from cutting in tel hashomer hospital here.

Eli, I have a friend who has a farm and a small fig orchard in Sde Ya'akov near Haifa. Look for zak farm.

i saw them online but do they sell plants or cuttings?
i think they do like a day out where you pick their fruit and pay for what you pick

if you can help and introduce me to them it can be better than approaching from here....
thanks

hey Bass i found their mail.
thanks man

Eli, tell him you know Bass. Nadav is a great man.
