1st year rooted vs 1st year grafts...

I know that most everyone's rule of thumb is that the first year of a rooted cutting's figs will probably be bland or to even pinch off first year fruit to concentrate on the root ball and maybe won't be good till the 3rd or 4th year...
What about figs from a graft???
Say the root stock was on its 3rd year, strong enough to give that graft a good push... Should those figs not really be judged until its 3rd-4th year???

I'd like to hear your thoughts...

My thinking is the fruit may be challenged until the growth settles down. With a big established root and small top, bud or two from graft, the new growth will be vigorous. I think that's not favorable for fig quality. However with certain varieties, small fruit that shrivels as it ripens, I've had good fruit on vigorous trees. It's the big figs that tend to get watery that suffer from strong roots and vigorous growth, IME.

Thanks Steve... I'll definitely be comparing both this summer...

I have a rooted sister Madeleine dark grafted and one rooted. (both are only about 2 months old)
So the race is off. Will post pics of each tomorrow
