UPDATE: Our weather has been unseasonably warm so far, and the forecast calls for lows around 50F for at least the next 2 weeks, so it'll still be a while yet before frost comes and sends our outdoor trees into dormancy. My best guess is that I'll be able to clip and ship in early November, but it'll just depend on the weather. I'll post more updates and pics along the way so that you can all stay up-to-date on the progress. Here's the weather forecast for my area: http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/l/66535:4:US

Strawberry Verte fig cuttings are now available and have been added to the main listing. If any of you have already placed an order for other cuttings and want to add SV to your order, just place an additional order for the new SV cuttings. I'll refund the shipping charge on that new order, bundle the SV cuttings with your original order, and ship them all together. Happy figging :)

Is strawberry verte the only new variety you added?

I am in 6a in Michigan. How long have you had your plants in ground? What do you do to winterize if anything. I have a small Hardy Chicago I got this spring my first one and did not think in ground would work here. Thanks

All of my outdoor in-ground figs were started as cuttings last year around February and planted in-ground around May/June. I mounded dirt up around their bases last winter, but they all died to the ground anyway. Nevertheless, they came roaring back this spring. I started picking ripe fruit from the Celeste (which may actually be Improved Celeste) on September 2nd and from the Hardy Chicago in mid September. The Marseilles Black has fruit that is about 3 days away from being ripe. Salce and Dottato seem to be a couple of weeks away, so they'll probably ripen, but O'Rourke is maybe 5 weeks away, so it has little chance of beating the frost. Most of my figs aren't grown outdoors in-ground, though, they're grown either in-ground in my tunnels or in pots that are overwintered in the tunnels and taken outside in the spring. Those ripen more fruit since they wake up earlier and get a longer season.

Greenfin, I've already placed 2 orders and paid for shipping twice. Now that you have added strawberry verte I don't have it and would like it as well but I don't wanna keep adding and paying for shipping each time. Is there a better way to just add to my order or something? When will you do refunds on shipping? Just not sure how to go about this...

I've been refunding the shipping charge on everyone's add-on orders as soon as I see them, usually same-day. PM me your name and I'll check to see if you fell through the cracks. EDIT -- I found you, and you're right, you did fall through the cracks. Sorry about that! I just sent your shipping refund. I think you're the only one, but to everyone else who has multiple orders: if any of you still haven't received the shipping refund from your add-on order(s), please pm me and I'll get it taken care of :)

FYI - I spoke with a representative at the California Department of Food and Agriculture regarding shipping fig cuttings into California and here is the reply:Quote:
Hello Scott- To follow up our phone conversation, shipping fig cuttings into CA have no additional requirements. If they are being mailed, please make sure the outside of the box indicates the type of plant material and from where. They may be inspected for live pests and potentially rejected (destroyed) if any are found. Thank you for checking with us!

That's surprising to read, but good news if that person is correct. Will you please pm me the phone number you used? If I call and they confirm that to me, I'll ship cuttings to California :)

Excellent.... so I get a 10% commission on all california orders, right? *grin* just kidding. Glad that got figured out. It was interesting - when I called them the lady I spoke with initially thought there would be restrictions based upon state of origin, but when she checked into it, she realized there were no such restrictions. Score one for CA Figgers!

Thanks for the kind words :) You've got a lot of fun ahead of you. Starting cuttings is probably my favorite step of the process of growing figs. Well, except for the "eating them" step, of course.

I'm surprised how many people are filing PayPal disputes against me over not yet getting their cuttings. My trees aren't dormant yet, folks! I've tried to be very clear, both in this thread and on my site. Here's the text from the top of my site: Quote:
We're getting close to cuttings season, and we will have many varieties of fig cuttings for sale once our trees go dormant, so it's time to start taking orders for Fall 2015 delivery of fig cuttings. This is first-come, first-served, so you'll need to place your order ASAP to ensure your spot in line. The following varieties are almost all $2 per cutting. They've been flourishing in-ground, so there will be a lot of good wood available to clip and ship in 4-6 weeks when they go dormant. The cuttings will have at least 3 nodes and will generally be around 5-6" long. Shipping will probably take place in late October or early November, depending on the weather.
Since our forecast continues to call for unseasonably warm temperatures through the end of October, shipping will probably be in early November.

This is tons of work and shame on folks for filing disputes without reading the T&C and without PMing James (Greenfin) first. Let's be realistic here. You are not likely to get your figs until the end of November through the end of Dec. It takes time for trees to go dormant and they haven't even started yet. It takes time to take cuttings and 5x longer if you do a good job of keeping the varieties separate. It takes time to cut the large branches into shippable but viable cuttings. Then it takes a lot of time to select a fair variety of the cuttings you have to put in each box getting all the varieties straight and giving each person different types of cuttings (tip, older wood, etc) to keep things fair. Then all those packages need to be sealed. It'll take 2-3 hours just to seal all those packages. He's unlikely to get them done all at once so it's multiple drives to the PO. For James it might be 30 miles away - he's rural. Just the process of getting cuttings ready for shipping takes many hours. Getting them sorted into packages takes several hours more. What does he get paid for his time? Nothing. Gas? Nothing. What are you paying for the cuttings? A fraction of what you'd have to pay otherwise. And some of you have the nerve to file disputes? Maybe I'm getting old and cranky but I'd instantly refund your money and block you from all further transactions if you did that to me. James, be careful of shipping. The first year I sent out cheap cuttings I lost over $100 because packages got lost and I charged just slightly under what the PO charged me. Despite tracking #s I replaced all packages that got lost. In my opinion you should be charging actual shipping rounded up+$2. I took photos of everyone's address and tracking # and PMed it to the person. Saved a lot of answering PMs :) And all this goes times 100 for Jon.

Amen R cantor ! Time is money and money is time. I highly doubt he is recovering even a fraction of his investment on the cuttings process, let alone the planting and yearly care of the trees.
It's a blessing that this forum has members so generous.

You must be really savvy with computer stuff. I can't be tempted any more, but that is a cool way to sell your cuttings! Applause! Good luck with your sales! I was tempted by one, but the decree came down hard! "NO MORE FIG TREES!" So I love what I have. Suzi

Crazy people filed disputes anyway. Even if unclear of the shipping dates. Everyone I've talked to and dealt with so far are more than nice and generous. Now if it was spring and I hadn't received them I might be wondering. But I have no worries that I'll get my cuttings. I don't even check the thread for info on when you'll ship cuz I don't doubt that I'll get them. Only reason I check back is to see if more varieties have become available so I can buy more. I agree with rcantor, shame on them. If you cut and ship mine last I won't complain. Can't beat the price and selection, especially for a newbie like me. Thanks for doing this and please let us know when the rest become available. I really want some of those :D

Agreed, I'd def rather have dormant cuttings rather than fresh summer cuttings. I have had better luck. Lignified wood always roots better for me. I've had almost 0 success with green cuttings thus far but I'm just learning a lot of the ways you guys have found to work. Hey GreenFin, are you keeping any kind of updated list of what people ordered? I've placed 3 orders so far but now I can't remember what and how many I ordered. No biggie or anything if not, just curious. If you are and you get a little free time and don't mind, can you PM the info? If you need my PayPal ID let me know. Thanks again for everything.

UPDATE -- We finally got frosted a couple of nights ago, so I'm anticipating clipping and shipping in about 2 weeks. That'll give the trees a bit of time to lose their leaves, while still allowing me to get them pruned before we get any major freezes that damage the wood.

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner, I just saw it. If you pm me your PayPal ID I'll tell you what all you've ordered.

Hello, I guess I was late to the party, but I just ordered a few of the remaining variety cuttings you have left. I look forward to receiving them and watching them grow. Thanks for offering these. The only fig plants I have is a small brown turkey cutting and an unknown variety cutting. They are still alive and growing so no complaints.

Hello and welcome to the forum! You only missed out on the first dance, the party season is just getting underway :) I'll be doing another round of cuttings in early winter (20-30 varieties), and maybe another one in late winter, so you'll have more chances.

We finally got a light frost a few nights ago, so I'm planning to start pruning this coming weekend and then ship the cuttings early next week. I'll send tracking info when the packages are in the mail :)

A lot of people put emphasis on popular/exotic cultivars, which is great because it highlights some of the better fig varieties; however, I am most interested in the figs our members love regardless of pedigree. Currently Growing: a bunch of varieties.

After 3 straight days of pruning, it's almost time to start packaging and shipping! Woo-hoo! The first packages will ship out tomorrow, but it'll probably take me 2-3 days to get them all sent off. While you're waiting for them to arrive, you can order more :) http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/cuttings-round-2-20-varieties-7789513?pid=1289822009
