200 year old (unknown) fig tree

Hi All,

I was out at lunch today to visit a fig tree I took cuttings of last year to see what the figs looked like. The tree is Huge, thought to be over 200 years old. Location is Amwell Street, in Islington, London (UK).

Does anyone have any idea what the variety might be as I've given cuttings to friends and am growing one myself. There weren't lots of figs on it, I assume it's not getting enough water to crop well, I took one unripe fig with me and photographed it at work.

(this is my first topic started, will try to post photos, hopefully it works)

Many thanks
Steve

Not sure, but what a sight!  Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Great pictures.  I was going to say Atreano, but your leaves look just a bit different.  Here are what my atreano leaves look like:

That is a beautiful specimen! I just love seeing pictures of really old fig trees. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Love to see old fig trees!
you will know better if you cut open the fig.
If the flesh is white (translucent) then it is likely a lattarula (Marseilles white) that grows well in cool areas.

I have never seen a fig like that before.  What a beautiful tree! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, sunshine - not seen that for a while! That tree is amazing, lucky you being able to visit it in your lunch hour.

Thanks Frank and Pino for the help to try to ID the variety, it is very difficult, the leaves were quite different on different parts of the tree.

I was reading about the handfull of really old fig trees in london, trees that size are very rare it seems, a little more info here:

Hi,
My 2 cents on Osborn Prolific ... A ripe fig would help of course. But that brownish color in the fruit reminds me of photos of OP.
Mine might crop later this year ... Hopefully ... So for now, Osborn UNprolific as someone stated ones ...

Nice find . I think it's a white Marseilles as Pino said.

Welcome, Steve and, what an amazing tree!  Wow!  I was trying to find more details about the tree such as who may have planted it, etc.  Anyway, great photos. Not sure what variety.

Fig has a neck white M does not. At least mine,do not. Lol. You never really know what your figs really are unless you have a distinctive variety like BM OR I258 ETC
