2014 Season - Douglassville, PA

A Col de Dame Grise and Malta Black cutting rooted in the sphagnum moss and have been moved over to 50/50 perlite/potting soil pots in the humidity chamber.

A slight tug on some of the cuttings that were placed directly in perlite pots gives me hope that some of them are rooting, although a few I am losing hope in.

The recent "warm" spell and sunny days have ripened a few more figs. The Black Ischia continues to produce decent figs and the Figo Preto now only has a couple of figs left... it will be a very sad day when they are all gone!

Black Ischia

Figo Preto

The Figo Pretos are still amazing. My wife made the statement of "wow I can't believe how some figs can taste so completely different!" I think we have a new fig-a-holic!

Nice Nick, at least you will have something to look forward to next fig season.

Wow nice job...those look great .....makes me want to run out and buy a greenhouse.....lol

Wayne I hope to have MANY more next year! I plan to keep several Figo Pretos and Black Madeiras!

Tonight also marked another accomplishment... my first (and likely last) cuttings of my Sodus Sicilian!

Those two are now up for auction on ebay, but I did keep one small terminal cutting for myself.

First I got some new wax to try from the local nursery.

I used a tea candle tin and cut a piece of the wax, then used a spatula to hold it over the stove to melt the wax.

Then I dipped both ends of the ebay cuttings and the non terminal end of the one I was keeping.

Next, I dipped it in a hydrogen peroxide bath.

I am going to use a peat moss and perlite mixture to root this one in. The perlite only pots seem to dry out too fast.

I placed it in the humidity bins with the others and now we cross our fingers and see what happens!

Do it! I don't regret mine one bit! I just wish it was a 12 month greenhouse and connected to the house to make life easier.

still working on convincing the wife, maybe one day...

It is a sad day... my last figo preto fell. My second to last Sodus Sicilian as well.

Both were delicious!

Absolutely Shailesh! Now I need to start getting some more cuttings going for something to do over the winter!

Don't feel too sad Nick, at this rate you'll be getting brebas in March or April.

Congrats on a great year!

I hope so Kelby! I didn't get a single spring breba this year!

Another sad day... My last Sodus Sicilian fig fell! This fig was a champ this year. It grew from a cutting, put out one breba and several main crop figs. I really look forward to seeing what it can do next year!

I also got my first Flanders fig, although it needed longer on the tree.

The Black Ischia must be in the sweet spot in the greenhouse as it continues to grow and stay green in the corner where the sun first hits in the morning.

My wife and I also exchanged Christmas gifts early since we will be traveling to see family next week and didnt want to drag all the presents along.

She gave me a few fig items I thought were awesome!

The first was a fig cookbook!

The second item was genious... I have been trying to find something I could use for when I go fig pickin or cleaning up leaves in the greenhouse as carrying a basket or bucket gets cumbersome. She bought me a fly fishing stripping basket and it's perfect! I would never have thought to use one of those for my figs!

Nick, look at all that unused land behind you, at least enough for 2-300 fig plants.

I know! Unfortunately, I don't own any of it.
