2017 Spring Almost Here  ...

This early-Feb morning (bright sun, currently 38*F outside), I heard one of our local/native very beautiful 'Red Cardinal'
male birds (loud) singing his heart out. Possibly claiming his territory and/or serenading  his/a wife to start a new nest ?

Only 41 days, 8 hours and 34 minutes to go.... Not that I'm counting....

While I'm looking forward to spring and the growing season again, I can't help but miss having a little snow so I can go sledding with my kids. Then again, I can remember a few recent winters in which I broke my back shoveling every few days. I noticed a juvenile Red Tail Hawk staking out territory in the woods behind my house. I was wondering if he overwintered or possibly migrated back up already. Either way, pretty neat to watch. I hope he does a number on the burrow full of bunnies waiting for me to plant my garden.

To the newbies out there, this is the voice of a legend!!

One more month and I will starting getting the greenhouse ready.
Will start moving some fig trees there and start the arduous re/up potting and root pruning.

Spring time is here already here in El Paso. 70s all week with 80 towards the weekend with lows about 50. The starlings are already migrating and the grackles are doing their computer calls. Some fruit trees already have flowers on them amd all sorts of trees are budding out.

Only 39 here in Battle Ground, Washington.  We are really looking forward to Thursday, when it gets up to 50 degrees.

28f (-2C) overnight lows here in the U.K,no snow but the moisture in the air freezes to everything,glass,metal,plants included,nothing is coming out of my grow room any time soon.It probably won't be another month or more before temps are consistently above freezing,and even then we can get caught out,my last possible freeze date here historically is in May,thankfully it rarely happens,last year we had a mild spring (similar to this one) and one final cold snap in April, it wiped out all my Pear blossom on my Williams(Bartlet?) pear,I don't think my baby fig trees will be going out until April or May,My 1 year old and older plants have made it through ok,no major damage,lost 1 terminal bud when temps dipped to -4 here one night,very much looking forward to spring

Spring? When did we have winter?

 Here in coastal N. Florida we didn't have ONE day below freezing (at least not at my house...live a few blocks from the river). Peach trees never lost leaves and now they are covered in blooms.  Glad I've got some very low chill hour varieties, as most of my others didn't get enough chill hours to produce fruit, I imagine...

I know that "cold" is relative, but did others have as comparatively mild winter as we had here?

As I said earlier, never trust the (crazy) weather.

Today is sun-bright again with highs around 59*F (possibly breaking a date-record of 61).
Yes, our local Red Cardinal male bird was out singing his heart out again today, little does he know that ..

But, but; starting to-night, we are (forecast) to have some mixed rain/snow
and followed tomorrow  with
low temps only in the upper teens (19*F), 6-10" snow accumulation & strong/dry winds (a known fig-killer); go FIGure!

Time to check/ready-up my little snowblower - no more back-breaking snow shuffling for old me...

Richie I know what you mean about the hurricanes... Im watching the water temps in the Atlantic and it does not bode well for this upcoming season.  We've been "lucky" for a decade but that ran out with Matthew -- lost most of my in-ground trees due to flooding and it killed my shop fridge that had my cuttings in it... came back to a wreck and by the time I found out about the cuttings they were so molded over that I only got four successful starts ... from both gifted cuttings and ones I paid for :P

Most of duck season was spent in t shirts and now its a month before turkey season starts and the redbuds are already about to bloom and the gobblers are already doing their thing... sigh...

55 in NJ today...and possibly 5-12 inches of snow overnight!

Got into my beehives today to see if they need food. Perfect weather for it...for today only.

Just got whacked with over 2 feet of snow.

Hang in there Joe days are getting longer and forecast is for a few more days of slushy snow and then 45/50 daytime to end of Feb. 
Then March arrives!
Getting very difficult to keep the figs asleep so get ready for the fig shuffle.

No complain here with one foot of snow today that is tapering now and -12C. 
Here the winter eventually changes to spring in mid summer. Fig heaven.

Good to hear from George though.
