2nd annual fig festival in Staten Island NY

September 15th in Staten Island NY is the date of the second annual fig festival.  Last year about 60-80 people showed up with figs and fig related products and it was a great time.  There is no charge but participants are encouraged to show up with figs or fig based products.  I attended last years festival and stuffed my face with all kinds of figs.  There is no formal agenda, it's just locals showing up with figs.  For information go to silive.com.  Forum members take note:  I ran into a former employee of Belleclare nursery last year and cleaned him out of malta blacks!  I don't know if he has any left, but he will be there as well as myself.  Hope to see you there.

I wish I'd have known of this sooner, I'd plan my fishing trip to Montauk earlier.  Enjoy the festival and maybe next year I'll plan to make it.

Hi Ed,
if you bring camera please post some pictures if you desire.
Thanks

Is it on west shore? This year? And if that guy is there could you leave one Malta black for me?

Near boardwalk, East shore.  I will see if he has any no problem if he does getting it to you.

Sweet thanks Ed. Hopefully I'll see you there

Is anybody going to this?  If going, I can bring any special orders that I have.

Sorry Ed im not going . But if i was i would have asked that fella if he had this fig plant to sell or new someone that has it from Belleclare , i have asked about this on forum
in 2009 and 2011 basically a dead end.

#93 Fico Nera Napolitano -A popular Napolitano fig from Naples also called Fico Piccolino. Small to
medium, purple/black, blood red center.

This should be very interesting.

I think that I will show up and possibly persuade my wife to come along too.

I would love to go to this, but making it on a thursday is rough. Maybe next year....

Vito, are you going this year?  Georgi, please try and make it.  I know at least one person who will buy from you what ever you bring :)

i was unaware that people have plants for sale. if this is the case, i would set time aside and tried to make it. this would be a major feat for me going to a major city like nyc. i have to say..me coming from the sticks to the big city..well maybe next year.  good health luke

I am not very familiar with Staten Island, NY at all; and I had some trouble pin-pointing

the exact location where I should go to. An answer to my email question:

"[The SI fig festival is] taking place at Sea Turtle Fountain, Midland Beach (on the ocean).
Fountain is off Father Cappodano Boulevard, at Jefferson Avenue.
Cappodano runs parallel to the shoreline."

Pinpoint:
Father Cappodano Boulevard and Jefferson Ave SI NY
(for xyz-map travel directions)..

I see a loop there, possibly around the fountain?

If lost, just ask for the 'Sea Turtle Fountain' along 'Midland Beach' by the ocean.....

Hoping to see some familiar fig-friends there and also to meet some new ones,
George.

Sorry Ed I can't make it. but my brother and nephew said they Will go.
Vito

I'm a first time user in this forum!

I will be attending the Fig Fest tonight at 7:00pm with my better half.  I am bringing cuttings from seven of my fig trees - they are:

13 cuttings from my Black Mission Figs
13 cuttings from my Italian White Figs
13 cuttings from my Peter's Honey Figs  (++++The best++++)

I am also giving two (2) potted Black Mission Fig cuttings that were started early this summer........

See you all this tonight......

Regards,

Tony, welcome to the forum and please bring some of those ripe peters honey figs that I read about in the SI advance.  To date I have not been impressed with the taste of Peters honey.  Maybe you can change my mind!  Georgie, I wish I could be of some help with directions but I am comming from the other way and have never went there from your direction.

Hi Ed:

The Fig Fest event was good, even though it was cold and wet!  I have a question for you?

What do you do in the winter with all your potted fig plants?

Regards,

I put them in an unheated garage thats attached to my house.  Yes I had a good time, ate lots of different figs and did some trading with Georgie.  Those who didn't come missed out on some free Georgie's Maltese falcon cuttings!  I am changing my mind about Peters honey.  Your strain was excellent.  Lets do some cuttings swap in the fall.

Martin,

I did inquire about BC#93 for you; sorry the guy does not have that fig.

I bought BC# 92(Zadar), 99(Zana), 101(Miller EBT) and PotsDammer(Germany).

Great - let me know when you want to swap cuttings!

I am bringing two potted figs inside my house.  Do I keep watering them all through the winter months or just let them go dormant?

Why thank you George that was very kind of you.

Tony, let them go dormant and then bring them in an UNHEATED garage.  i usually water them twice during the winter.  Martin, we tried.  He has lots of BC stuff, just not #93.

Thank you also Ed.

Pic of BC#101 (Miller EBT).
In spite of all the rain we had, they still tasted good.
Body size is about, or larger than a USD quarter coin - I forgot to put one in the pic..

Gorgi, because we are testing fogs for cold hardiness, I have been searching high and low for BC # 101, for at least 4 years now.

Leon, has one that he got direct from Hanc Mathies. But, because he just got his plant, it's still to small to take cuttings from.

Gorgi, if you don't think the person you bought yours from would mind, and has more plants or cuttings of BC# 101 to sale, could you PM me, his contact information?

Or, does any one else out there have a extra plant of BC # 101. Or cuttings they would be willing to sale?

I can also trade plants of Gino's. Hardy Hartford, and Sal's EL.
I cam also trade cuttings of Hardy Hartford, Ronde de Bordeaux, Sal's Corleone, Marseilles Black, Brooklyn White, and Danny's Delight, for BC # 101, aka: Hanc Mathies's English Brown Turkey.

Thanks

Bob
