These are my 3 year old figs from cuttings. The first year they were kept in a container. The 2nd year they were put in the ground in spring and grew like weeds. When it turned cold and went below freezing the wood was still green and almost all of it died down to where I had pine straw around it. Even though I did wrap with burlap and a tarp. Now there many branches coming out. Too many I think. My question is should I cut some off now? Wait and hope the wood turns brown and take some air layers? Or just wait until the leaves fall off and take cuttings?

I've been exprimenting with air layers without making any incisions in the brown wood. It works just as good, if not better than my previous approach.
I currently have one AL on a relatively green branch. My theory is that it should work without killing the branch and If it doesn't, it should not cause any damage.

The first one is an RDB. 2nd one a Strawberry Verte and the 3rd is Zingarella.

make sure you don't water or fertilize them after July. This will ensure that the growth will slow down and harden off before freezing weather.

I had read to not fertilize the 1st year planted so I didn't. However I did use Miracle Grow garden soil mixed with native soil to backfill so thinking back I guess that I did fertilize.
