3 feet tall Unk Carini air layer removed tonight.

After 6 weeks on the mother tree, I removed it and placed it in a pot.  The root ball was nice and healthy but not sure if it will support such a tall stick.  I removed all but 3 leaves.  It stands 3 feet tall.  Time will tell!  Also, as you can see, I had done the air layer while the wood was still green.  It did just fine.

Good job Frank!

A nice healthy successful air layer, congrats Frank.

Very nice!  If the leaves aren't wilting yet, you probably have enough roots.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Looks great. Can an air layer be done pretty much any time of the year?

Simon,

For my zone (7), I can do an air layer from spring up until around August.  It takes up to 8 weeks for a strong root ball to develop.  After the air layer has been removed from the parent tree, it needs a few weeks to acclimate and adjust to its new found independence before the cold hits and its time for dormancy.

Strong work!

Hi Figgyfranck,
Nice work.
Did you pinch the terminal bud ?
I prefer to leave it on this time of the year, and pinch following April or Mai .

Great job Frank! A very healthy looking plant. I have a couple of large Carini plants from cuttings I got from you! They are doing great....:)

Thanks everyone.

jds,
-I pinched the terminal bud a few weeks after starting the air layer, as the branch kept growing very fast.  It grew two more shoots and I removed them a few days ago.  I had thought about trimming about 12" off the main stem but I didn't know how the plant would react.  I like your idea of snipping the top in the spring.  Thanks

Frank A,
-Glad to hear, buddy!!
