I was just looking at the Just Fruits and Exotics web site and seen for the first time they are offering Black Maderia. I guess others have seen this as they only have one left. Good deal if your close as they sell at the nursery (pick up) for $19.99. Listed as 3 gallon, 2-3 feet.

Edit: Just looked again and I think I was wrong about just one left. The 1 was the quantity desired if you order.

That's a great price.  Good find.

I'd buy but shipping is nearly same as plant.

Last year JF&E had some young Black Madeira started that I am pretty certain were not as Labeled.  I think highly of the nursery and have bought a lot of plants from them, but I just want to put some input here. I was there last fall in their growing area and saw a couple small weak 3 gal BM that looked correct.  I asked Brandy the owner about them, and she said had a bunch of better ones. When she showed them to me I told her those sure didn’t look like BM. The wood for these she had obtained from someone else that she listed by name. I don’t know the person, but am familiar with their name from NAFEX and SFF, as far as I know never saw them on the fig forums. Brandy also showed me a potted mother tree they had started from UC Davis USDA, and it looked correct. The couple weaker looking plants were not with the other young plants and the started dates that JF&E uses on their tags was older. I purchased one of these and this year it was dead on to my own BM started from UC Davis.  At that time I was there I convinced Brandy after she did some looking online that the others were not BM and she was going to remove the BM Labeling.  I obviously can't’state for certain what they have now is not true, and sure don’t want to badmouth a nursery where I have spent more money than any other, and will purchase from again. The person Brandy got the cuttings from is respected as well, but we all know how easy it is to obtain a mislabeled fig, so just putting this out there so folks are not surprised if they turn out not true.

Sounds like another "blue ischia" to me, but I hope it is legit. It would be great if there was now somewhere other than ebay to get this amazing variety. I am just not sure I can trust that a nursery is now selling and mass producing one of the hardest figs to obtain and root... but I hope I am wrong!

no need to worry your little heads anymore.  they are now out of stock!

Hopefully someone here got one and can keep us informed!

Dennis, did you just buy them out?   :)

Now, Calvin, it wasn't me! But I did buy a few of those Black Maderia....along with some other figs. :)

Their shipping and handling is fine with me. Considering their trees are in 3gallon and 4 can be packed in one box. And considering the fact that if I had to drive 8 hrs to get there and drive 8 more hours back and to keep in mind of the gas and wear and tear on my vehicle.....I think the 40 or 50 bucks is well worth it.

yeah i do too and its a very high quality fig

I bought it earlier today. I guess I'll find out one way or another.

Good luck Bill! I wonder if they have a source and plan to continue growing/selling them.

Haha...I tried to place an order yesterday....man they sold out in less then 24 hours....oh man that's insane

I hope its legit.  Seems like a low price for BM.

Do these mail order nurseries use their own photos? It seems like I have seen some of the photos elsewhere. The reason I ask, the buyer is purchasing on the assumption that this has to be the real deal if the photo depicts the fig harvested from their mother tree.

What does a photo prove?

What if there was no photo at all?

Durio Nursery sell figs all year around and no photo of figs.  Bellecare did the same thing for years.  I think legitimate nurseries are worth buying from.  It keeps them in business for the future.  :)

I agree, we have all seen a few online nurseries with pictures of different varieties, but what they send is a crapshoot to if it will actually be correct. I havent dealt with this nursery and I hope the BMs are legit, I just worry it may not be the "real deal" and then there will be people next year (or even this year) trading cuttings of BM from the tree they received that are really VdB or something else. This hobby can be so confusing at times :)

Well Dennis time will tell. I hope you are correct.

I would not think this nursery would be trying to deceive anyone. All plants I got from them were true to type. We need to realize the Black Maderia has been popular for some time and is now greatly disseminated. I got mine less than three years ago and with not much effort have given away or sold at least a dozen and probably still have that number. The time has come for the demand and price to decline. When I first started collecting a few years ago Sals Corleone sold for over a hundred dollars for a one gallon, now nobody wants one except for the occasional crazy bid on ebay.

Wayne, my order has been placed.  I've been informed my trees will arrive on Wednesday.  I am tickled pink!  I'm off that entire week.  Now, I've got to find room in my garage for them!  Ha!  The owners call me every year when their figs come in and I always place an order over the phone.  Their packaging is the best I've seen of any nursery.  And their trees are larger than expected.

I agree with you Jake, they are one of the best around, honesty without question, but did you read strudeldog's post where a mistake happened. I am very careful but I know I have made hundreds of mistakes in my lifetime, and I am sure there are several "mistakes" that all of us have purchased at some time, even from reputable people. We hear this time and time again. I definitely will purchase from JF & E without a second thought. This is not a money issue, its a possible mistake issue. And, I still can not understand why some people feel a person has the right to use photos owned by someone else without permission, I guess I need a refresher course.

They have a few available again.

Absolutely, Wayne. Living only a few miles from JF&E, I am a big booster of this nursery, but even the best can make mistakes.
Point in fact, I bought a Nero from them last year that produced light colored figs this year. I haven't notified them yet, but would be surprised if they didn't make good on their error.

they should at least show u some pics will u guys post pics when they arrive
