No shipping to CA :(

Just is case it wasn’t clear in my prior post I DO like JF&E. I have spent more money with them than any other Nursery, and will continue to purchase from them. Their selection on Persimmon is one of the best.   I don’t know these BM are even the same ones I observed when I was there, as like I stated they were going to remove BM labeling, but even then maybe they changed their mind. Mine is one opinion and I expressed it to the owner, I sincerely hope Folks do receive BM, and what you receive will be the true judge. Coming from FL they might even have leaves remaining so Dennis, Bill and others might even get a good indication on arrival. Maybe I should have stated nothing, but I wanted folks at least aware of what I observed.  All nurseries make mistakes. It is not an attempt to deceive by them, and I am thrilled to see a nursery try to offer the best cultivars they can. They are charging the same reasonable price as for any other fig they offer.

Strudeldog, man it's all good!  I'm glad you got the opportunity to visit and see her stock.  I did the exact same thing.  Three years ago, I drove to Houston Texas.  On my way, I visited Petal from the Past, Durio Nursery, and James Robin.  PFTP was quite impressive and spacious!  Durio and JR trade from time to time.  It's good to visit nurseries first hand.  That way you can see for yourself how they are caring for their plants and see where they get them from.  I'm thinking about revisiting them again in March!  I've just been notified by UPS that my trees are here!  YEA!  If my trees have leaves, I will post pictures of them.

Congratulations Dennis, please keep us updated, I am still waiting for their Miss Hall and a couple of others that are not even listed anymore.

Dennis the suspense is killing us! We need pics! :-)

I saw the Black Madeira on there website a few days ago while looking for Asian Persimmions and though that sounds to good to be true so didn't buy one as I had no experience with this nursery.  Oh well from what people are saying it seems like a nice nursery and maybe where I get my Persimmions.

Check Stark Bros. for persimmons. We bought paw paws and a Saijo persimmon from them and they were nice.

Sorry, my package was from Petals from the Past.  May come today or tomorrow.  More to come....

I ended up getting one of these for my brother in law for Christmas. It arrived today and he sent me a few pics.

It is a good size tree, but mostly only new leaves on it, so hard to tell what variety it is... Thoughts?

Looks really nice Nick, good size and everything looks promising, even the broken piece will make a wonderful cutting.

I got an eMail from them saying they Madeira is back in stock...if anybody wants it...

Thank you for the heads up Aaron.

Just to be clear everyone, Im not confirming this as Black Madeira. If anything, my money is still on no, but I wont be able to tell until it leafs out better. My BIL is in Georgia, so hopefully it wont go dormant.

It's worth a shot. Even if it's not, could still be a great fig. I guess only time will tell.

My brother in law tangoed with me today and showed me the leaves on his Black Madeira NOT. I am pretty certain at this point it is not a black madeira. He's in Georgia and is starting to develop figs, so we should be able to confirm it isn't later this summer. It had a lot of five lobed leaves.

Yea Johnny all my black madeiras have zero five lobed leaves.

I just asked my brother in law for updated pictures of his JFE Black Madeira NOT. He is outside Savanah,GA. There is little doubt in my mind that this is NOT a Black Madeira.

Thank for updating this post. You just saved me some money.

It is probably a "black fig from Madeira" and still could be black but does not look like an infamous BM .

Maybe, or they may have bought cuttings from an unreliable source and it is Hardy Chicago.

Posting in this thread as well as the two others regarding JF&E Black Madeira...
Ok I have an update. Brandy at JF&E contacted me today in repsonse to my email. She was extremely nice and very upset about the mix up. She provided me a copy of her USDA receipt from 2008, to show the authenticity of their Black Madeira. She also provided a picture of their mother plant:

There were also two pictures of child plants:

The pictures she provided look exactly like Black Madeira. Brandy was also very insistent that JF&E has a strong "true to name" gaurantee. I told her my Brother's tree was healthy, so no need for a refund, but that I would like to purchase another true Black Madeira. She insisted that I not pay since I did not get the correct variety.

Mistakes happen. Sometimes cuttings get dropped, swapped, confused, etc. The important thing is once realized, the seller makes good.

Two important things to note:
1) JF&E appears to have a true Black Madeira UCD
2) There was a mixup with at least a couple of their trees
3) They are willing to ensure their customers are happy

I will report back when I receive the replacement tree next week.

I purchased a "black madeira" from them this spring... also producing 5 lobed leaves and its first fruit are beginning to color... Ill post photos of it tomorrow.  Also seems to be a mix-up and am wondering what it could be -- Nero or Beall?  A bird got to my first ripening fig last week and the interior almost seemed white...

I am glad this is all coming out, and JF&E is doing the right thing. Look Back to my post #4 in this thread. I wish they would have left the labeling off those young plants back then. I bet Brandy wishes that as well. I actually tried to make contact with who she listed as the source for this cuttings a few weeks ago when pictures started showing of the plants, I might try further to contact him  for a possibility of the history of this plant.  Not only the leaves but the vigor of the plant made me quite certain. I saw their real BM when I was there.

I received the replacement Black Madeira from JF&E last night...

As far as I can tell, it looks to be a Black Madeira. I won't know for sure until it fruits.

Excellent! Hope it's the right one! I should have 2 on the way soon.
