The short answer is: I don't know. They are from a local fig nazi, and I am not sure of his source. Though he didn't get it directly from Davis, that might still have been the original source. There is another fellow about 50 miles from here who has a Black Ishi Fig tree (I am sure it is just a mis-spelling), that as a trunk about 4" in diameter. It is an older tree and now in severe decline, but must have quite a grower earlier in it's lifetime.

Will you please tell us how you rooted your Black Ischia? I know that some have purchased trees and until your post, I have not found any posts about successful rooting of Black Ischia. I know that John (jsvand5), Herman, and Sue V has posted about it but I think you are the first to post about and show a picture of a successfully rooting.

I haven't had any luck and I am truly interested in what you did. I have read about notching, angle cutting, or smashing the cut end. What did you do?

I am having trouble seeing what you did. Is that a paper towel covering the cutting that sits on sphagnum or just a paper towel?

Jd,  no sphagnum used , each scion i wrap kinda lose in misted damp paper towel , i have also paper towel on bottom of container and on top of scion also.
For me it has worked well and is easier for me than some other ways but those ways also work well too.

JD :That is a hybrid of Black Ischia.When bad grower get hybridised,like in this case,the new progeniture grow much better and is much healthier plant.

Now you have even more curious and possibly confused because I am not sure that I am sure I know what you mean. Can you say more? What do you mean when you use the word "hybridized".

I also have a few follow up questions:

1) Are the Black Ischia cuttings that UCDavis distributes considered "originals"?
2) Do you consider your Black Ischia tree is hybridized? If so, why? If not, why?
3) I read your follow up to a post by John (jsvand5) in which you confirmed that his friend had bought a Black Ischia. Was it an original or hybrid?
