32 degrees tonight:( in Alabama

Nice, Blake. BTW Becnel's Black Italian is on ebay as we speak. Petals might have some PapaJohn's tucked away, too, if they're not out of stock. Enjoy your field trip. Now that tax season is officially over *hooray* hope to be able to get my weekends back for some exploring.

My figs in ground are already leafing out. With an expected low of 33 what sort of dieback should I expect?

I picked up some the other day and its in transit as we speak!!!! Can you say SUPER STOKED!
Help me, what is Papajohns besides piazza?

I''m going with mostly tuff love tonight.  Only brought in a few of my pots.  Figs Pomegranate's and the few citrus I have.

Final low 32 but the good news is within the hour it rose to 36 so *maybe*  all is well...had to cover some pawpaw blooms too

31 in my neck of the woods.  If I can figure out pictures here....Anybody else have this?

Did picture come thru?  I can see it on my screen...

billy,i haven't seen this on figs, but i've seen it lots.

take a walk in the woods. you'll see lots of trees with healed scars from wounds that look like this. i think all you need do is protect it from bugs while it heals.

Maybe someone else can tell you Billy. I have no clue as to what that is.

@billy450, Yes last several days there has been few posts about those cracklings on figs... some are due to dead wood cracking and some due to cold... SAD.
Sorry it happened to your big tree.

i would say crack due to cold weather, but if you look at the middle of crack, it looks as if someone jammed a screwdriver or something and twisted to crack it open.

My biggest in ground tree died, i am hoping for the roots to be alive but all the bark started to bubble and peel off, cracks only happened around the the branch union off the trunk.

It doesn't get cold enough here to kills roots but dieback to the ground and the setback it causes just bites a big one.

fig1.jpg Here's a farther back photo, no sign of new growth, but it seems as Bob said if it's leaking it's not dead.  There are spots like that one on most every trunk.  Hoping for the best....

billy, that looks like a great tree. please show us a pic when it leafs out.

Hi billy450,
That is freeze damage. Sometimes water gets under the bark or in the inner of the trunk through a wound and with frost the water takes more volume and splits the bark.
I would put a tie around the trunk at that level to allow the trunk to graft back to itself.
It could mean that the trunk is toast as well. But you'll have to/I would wait until June or July before cutting anything .
You'll then be able to see more accurately what is still alive.

jds is correct, but such wounds aren't usually fatal.

I lost a lot of ends on limbs of my 3 year old Brown Turkey. First fig tree I ever planted and with hindsight would not have purchased BT. The weather was very nice in Atlanta a couple weeks ago, so I planted basil and tomatoes. Lost all the basil and most tomatoes in the cold snap 8 days ago or so. I should have paid heed to to saying in these parts to wait until after Easter to plant. I covered up or brought the other figs in and did not incur much damage to them. Mostly peter's Honey, Black Mission and Celeste.

Suzieqz, I had to prune to ground in early May, but new growth is now 7' tall!

Hey Billy, unbelievable growth, must have super roots. Where in North Alabama? I have land in Cedar Bluff and also Leesburg, on Weiss Lake.

North of Huntsville, almost in Tennessee.  Agree on the roots, very relieved these came back so well and so quickly.  Will have maybe a half-gallon of figs before first frost.  Whew.

Sounds good, I purchased some UNK Genoas from a lady around the Huntsville area.

great news billy. i'm surprised you had to cut all the way back to the ground but it worked wonderfully.

i wish i could get that kinda growth.
