4 Figs

I have 4 trees in my collection that are ripening up a fig or two every few days.  This morning all 4 of them had a ripe fig so I thought I'd take a photo and do a taste review.  I have been cutting back on my watering and the figs were all a little dry as a result.

At 12 o'clock is Desert King main crop.  Oddly this DK keeps ripening up its main crop figs.  This fig was sweet with a mild fig richness.  It actually tasted similar to LSU Gold, but not quite as good.  Overall it was decent.

At 3 o'clock is LSU Purple.  This is a 2 year old tree.  The fig was mildly sweet.  It had a good seed crunch.  It was pretty bland and didn't really taste like a fig.  It had a weird after taste that was almost like bell pepper.  I am hoping that this one improves with time like every one says.

At 6 o'clock is Joe's Jersey (my unknown).  This fig was medium sweet.  It tasted like a cross between a fig and a peach.  It was good.

At 9 o'clock is Violette de Bordeaux.  This fig was infested with ants pretty badly near the eye.  I cleaned them out, but still didn't trust eating the bottom of the fig.  So I ate the top 2/3 of it.  This fig was very sweet.  It had a rich flavor that reminded me of a perfectly ripe blackberry.  This fig was excellent.

Good looking figs, Joe.  Of course the ants would pick the best one.

Surprised about the Desert King. Should not have main crop where you are (no wasp), and sh9uld be Green with red interior. Might be a Deanna or some other variety. Nice looking fig, however.

My Desert King RT , cuttings from Encanto , also ripened a few maincrop this season in New Hampshire. I was very surprised, one was not good the others tasted decent as Joe said. I can't remember the interior color , but outside they looked just like Joe's.
Apparently Adriano had DK ripen maincrop before for some reason. Wish I knew why.

I've posted about this fig a couple of times before.  I bought it as Desert King from Burnt Ridge Nursery back in 2009.  It grew very slowly and never produced fruit until this year.  Then this spring it grew a lot and by the summer it was loaded with main crop figs.  I was waiting for them to drop, but instead they have been ripening up and turning yellow.  So far I have harvested about 30 of them.  They are sweet but have little fig flavor.  Some members have said this cannot be Desert King.  Others have said that Desert King sometimes ripens up a main crop and when it does this is what the figs are like.  I guess I'll find out which is right next spring.  Hopefully this is Desert King and I will have delicious green brebas with a red interior.
