My caged New Jersey Red became road kill a few days ago. All I can say is the person that did it was very apologetic while I was very apoplectic..

Paint some prune seal on that wound and it will probably be fine.

Also, set-up a punching bag for frustrations with dumb drivers.

On a side trail, last fall one of my daughters parked in the yard, right next to a very small, rare currant bush I was starting. And yes, you guessed it, when she went home she trampled it getting into her car. I was sick. But just yesterday I spotted new shoots coming out of the ground!

So keep a stiff upper lip, the fig will be OK.

I told you pruning a tree with an SUV wouldn't work.......

Pruning seal is not really ever a good idea unless needed to protect new large grafts, etc.  It traps in too much bacteria, and interferes with natural callusing of the wound.

Several years ago a guy apparently fell asleep while driving on the highway near my place and drove off the highway and down the 15' embankment.  Seemingly, when he awoke he put his foot on the gas instead of the break.  He traveled across my neighbor's place for about 200', grazed a large redwood tree, bounced off a 15" diameter pole laying on the ground at my neighbor's property edge and thereby sheering his drive line, then he traveled another 500 feet and ran over one of my chestnut trees, a pollinator.  His insurance company ponied up $1,500 for that tree!  The guy was shook up and didn't talk English so the falling asleep is only a guess.

Yes, like Harvey said...get his insurance company to pay for the damage done.

Jersey figs are probably used to that sort of thing. :)

Putting a value on the damage to the fig tree would be pretty hard, IMO.  The damage doesn't appear to be all that serious and it should heal over fine.

My chestnut tree, on the other hand, was ripped out of the ground and drug about 10' even though it was about 15' tall.

back about 14 yrs ago.. i want to one of my friends wedding. my wife was pregnant. my friend married a nice russian nurse. my friend is from long line of military tradition. his father was WWII fighter pilot.. his older brother is a general in USAF. it's was his 2nd marriage. needless to say, they didn't show up. i was the only person on groom side, along with my pregnant wife. 

the wedding went well. then his new wife's friends started to show up.. with gallons of vodka. 

what would two amerikans do? we had to protect our american pride. so it was him and i against about 5 russians drink vodka all night long. shot after shot after shot. i dropped my wife off at the hotel before it started. i knew it was going to get ugly. 

only thing i can say is.. i didn't hit a fig tree that night with my suv. 

I'd say that's a $3,000 tree.  It's very rare and being broken at the base like that there's no way to know if it will survive or not.  Definitely go after his insurance.   What was he doing driving in your backyard?

BTW, dibs on cuttings from the branch that was ripped off.  :)

Frank, from the appearance it looks like this wasn't the first time that poor tree got hit hard... there are other wounds above the fresh one and below the fresh one that look older wounds. What's with the location? LOL

Replace that chicken wire with SUV wire. Better yet, be proactive and go to semi wire. Then again, there is the previous damage, probably caused by a chicken since you felt the need for that fence. That's obviously a hard luck tree so maybe you should go on up to aircraft carrier wire, just to be on the safe side. Maybe an asteroid barrier instead of bird netting. Spray it with Armageddon repellent?

Found the solution to your problem aircraft arresting barrier...yea I think that should work.

Your tree looks like its off the road how did that happen was it family related ?

Martin's comment reminds me of another chestnut tree that was run into by a pickup with just slight damage.  My neighbor's future daughter-in-law quite quite excited while driving because there was a bee buzzing around in front of her face.  Wish she had thought about using the brakes before addressing the bee situation!  So what's the rest of your story, Frank?  Python?

Apoplecta, Florida is not my vacation destination. Sounds like time to start some young fig trees. Mend hearts and souls by presenting clumsy driver with his very own. Way to make a new friend out of a gauche meeting.
