The weatherman is warning of 60mph winds tonight into tomorrow. Anyone else worried?
We had 45mph winds around Thanksgiving, which broke the doors off of my greenhouse! I am putting ratchet straps around the greenhouse and over the roof panels. I am thinking I might spray it down with water in hopes that it freezes and helps lock the panels in place.
It may be a very rough night!

Yes Rafael, I'm not worried about the structure as much as the lightweight polycarbonate panels.

We only have doors on one side (front) with four roof vents... we tried leaving them all open during a small storm in the summer and that was even worse. I might need to buy a tarp next year that is large enough to cover it with all sides of the tarp reaching the ground so the wind cant get under it. 60mph winds are unheard of here though, so hopefully the weatherman is just exaggerating!

The winds are at 40mph... a lot of flexing, but so far still holding... scary part is this is just the start and winds are already higher than expected.
While watching the greenhouse I was leaning against my bedroom window and feeling it flex considerably... I don't know how people in hurricane areas do it, this is nerve racking!

Hmmm I have never had a problem with the grill, but you have a point. I should have laid it down at least. We did move the patio chairs inside and flip the patio table over.

Looking forward to your morning report. I hope everything survived! We get winds here called Santa Ana, hot winds off the desert, and they come with some huge gusts. I've lost two glass patio tables. Heavy tables. Wind just picks em up and slams em down. We learned to lay them down after those incidents. Lost a outdoor patio heater two. Wind just snapped it in half. No need for greenhouses here, but pots will blow over and tree limbs and trunks will snap. Hope everything went ok for you! Do the winds die down today? Suzi

The wind is cranking pretty hard here in nj. I hope your greenhouse hangs on for you. It's gonna be minus 2 here tonight with sustained winds......poor figs.

The winds continue to blow a steady 20-30mph here, but luckily we never hit much above 40mph. I was up most of the night worried and checking on the greenhouse, but she's holding up. Seeing her wiggle and wobble at 40mph, I can't even imagine what 60mph would have done to her!
Looks like a few more hours and we will be in the clear. Extremely cold though, 6 degrees. Even with two electric 1500W heaters, the temp is 34 inside. Now that the sun is out it should shoot up quick.

Nice!
Glad to hear it made it.
Do you run the heaters all winter?

Mine survived the wind, but the temperature read 34 degrees for a low last night and my heater was turned to high. Looks like I need another heater in there to keep it from freezing. God I hate winter.

I hadn't planned on it, but the figs lasted almost until January with a single heater set at 50, so I ended up leaving a few in there with the heat on. I just added a second heater in hopes that I can keep it above 50 starting in March to give my trees a good head start.

Amen to that! I'm surprised your single heater kept it as warm as it did. My single heater gains me 20degrees on cold nights, so last night it would have gotten into the twenties without the second heater.

My greenhouse looks pretty ghetto right now. I have plastic 3ml sheets on the roof to insulate, and old harbor freight greenhouse panels screwed over the windows on the north side. It's warm now, but the night is supposed to get down to -2. Does that take us down to zone 5b?

Different people have different comfort levels but last year my detached garage got as low as 23 deg on a few nights even with a heater. I didn't have any cold damage or breba loss on my container trees. Last night it got to 24 degrees. I think having the snow on the roof helped. Tonight I'll be lucky if I can maintain 23 degrees because they are calling for a low of 0 degrees here.

Glad your greenhouse made it through the wind last night, Nick. Now if we can make it through this next blast of arctic air, I will be happy, too. This could help your argument that you need a greenhouse attached to the back of your house. What do you think?
