Green Greek Fig pics

Good evening, early this year I purchase 2 Green Greek fig trees online.  Not knowing what to expect, I just took care of them and watched them grow taller than me (6'2").  Well it produced some figs, but I did not think they would materialize and ripen.  BOY WAS I WRONG!!  Its been raining 2 days now and today I went out to check on my trees and to my surprise I found one GG ready to pick.

I probably could have let it set on the tree 2 more days but I wasn't sure if the excess rain would cause it to split or not.  So, I picked it.  When I cut into it, it was beet red like Calvert.  And the taste was very sweet!  I am impressed!  I plan on taking cuttings from this bad boy this winter.  It is a keeper!  Cheers!

Thanks for sharing Dennis,

Don't know if the GG and the White Greek are the same but I am looking foreward to mine next year.

The color of the inside of your fig makes it all that much tastier.

And Yes, They do grow quite fast don't they?

Rafed, in my area, man oh man do they grow fast.  Mine is in a small 3 gallon pot.  And in early Spring it was a tiny old thing.  Today, it needs to be repotted but I dio not want to loose any figs so I left it alone and its doing fine.

Hi Dennis.  Do you remember where you got this from?

There are some listed on Ebay from a nursery in Florida.

Hope you are well my friend.

John

Nice job!

John,
I just potted one I got from the FL guy. Looks like he grows them indoors. Just needed some water and hardening off time.

Thanks Ruben.  It looks very healthy.  Thanks for the information.  I will transition it slowly to outside and full sun.

Hope you are having a great summer.

Best wishes.

John

Here's my unknown White or Green Greek I started from a cutting about four months ago.
O.K., so I'm a liar.

I got this tree about a month ago from another member here local.
It is about 25 or 30 years old or older and it sits on what it looks like a 35 or 40 gallon pot.

This tree is loaded with figs!

I hope by posting these pics maybe someone can identify it.

Please enjoy,

Beautiful tree Rafed

Thanks for posting the photo!

Hi everyone.

I ordered a Green Greek from here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/GREEN-GREEK-FIG-ROOTED-PLANT-SHIPPED-ITS-POT-/150611275153?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231121ad91

Does anyone know whether this is the real deal?

Thanks.

John

There is one problem:Green Greek ,is not pink inside, but dark red, burgundy almost.

Thank you Herman.

It was just an impulse buy.

But I think maybe I will just give it to a friend who is planting a new orchard here.  I ask him if he wanted a fig tree.  He said yes, so I said "what kind would you like?", and he said "just one with figs!"

So this one will have figs, and I will give it to him.

But I only want to grow varieties that are true to type, and it is no hurry, I will keep looking for a true Green Greek.

I know better, but sometimes it is very tempting to buy something.

Hope you are well my friend.

John

Well John:It can very well be Green Greek,All you got to do is save Dennis pix,and make sure your new tree makes the same dark red interior like Dennis Pix.
Where some people see ,deep pink other see ,dark red.

Yes, the guy on eBay is one source  where I got my GG.  The other source is Dalton. And the interior is ruby red, blood red with excellent flavor.  It ripens late in the season down south.  I'm gonna grow one in a huge pot in case my in ground tree dies this winter.  Its a must have for any collector.  cheers,

Thanks Dennis.  I got a little nervous when I read the description, but this is very good to know.

It may very well be true to type after all.

And I also remember our good friend Herman once saying (I am paraphrasing) that in the end name is less important than taste, and this looks like a great fig.

I am still learning, and greatly appreciate your help Herman and Dennis.

Very best wishes to all.

John
