I've been using these air layering cups for years and do a wonderful job of rooting. The same results can be obtained without using these, but those do come handy. It is full proof, so I don't risk cutting off a branch of my rare fig and not rooting for me. At can be done anytime in growing season, I'm keeping this plant in the greenhouse and within 3 weeks I start seeing roots.

Thank's for sharing your air-layering technique. That cup ensemble seems to be just the ticket, no mess, fuss, foil, or plastic wrap etc.

From a quick search, looks like they are available in at least two sizes:

Standard Rooter Pots: measure 4"H x 3.75"W top. Use on 1/4" up to 1/2" diameter stems.

Large Rooter Pots: measure 6.25"H x 5"W top. Use on 1/2" up to 1" diameter stems.

I repurposed 0.3 gallon Air-Pots for air-layers.  I have no limitations.  The picture below is two Air-Pots attached together around a ~3" limb.  Theoretically, I could use as large of an Air-Pot as is required.







The truth of the matter is you do not really need any fancy equipment to do an air-layer.  The containers mentioned above make it easier to manage the air-layer.

Those are pretty nice Bass. Like you said, they look like they would be just right for a rare variety that you don't want to take a chance with.

Do they seem to come away from the roots pretty easily when it's time to take the branch off?

Hi Bassam hope things are well.
In 2008 i bought plant from member and saved it , last season i brought it out of shed to airlayer my black madeira. It worked just fine, i still use the water bottles also.
Absent minded i never did take the blue date tag off !

Anthony, I got some from leevalley.com along with some other stuff. They were good to do
business with.

I usually just use sphagnum moss and it works well even with peat moss.
It works in many fruit trees besides figs as well.

I have wrapped plastic wrap around sphagnum moss to air layer Japanese maples. It's not fancy, but it works and no size limitations imposed by the plastic wrap.

so far i have been using plastic wrap also, but sometimes it gets really messy.
