Instead of hi-jacking my own thread, I thought I would start another about the figs for sale at Almost Eden (AE) figs. I trust that Dennis (snaglpus) while chime in and add his photos here since he has purchased fig trees from them previously and recently.

Last week I ordered:

Bissiri2
Brooklyn Dark
Delcon
Red Italian

My trees came Tuesday.  I potted them up in gallon pots yesterday.  I always soak my trees in root hormone for a day before transplanting them.  I'll post some pics within the hour.  I already have Jurapa, PN, Purple Passion, Syrian Long and Wuhan from John and other sources.  Syrian Long and Wuhan are have interesting leaf patterns.

Dennis,
I have a few questions:
  • Do you have a description for Delcon?
  • Is Jurapa actually Jurupa? If so, then maybe you can suggest that John from AE should correct their spelling to mitigate any confusion. Is it from UCDavis?
  • Is the Wuhan sourced from UCDavis?
  • Is Red Italian the same one that Jon has on his varieties page?

Thanks

Pretty sure delcon is misspelled probably Deleon wich I have and produces tasty brebas no ripe main crop yet also have their strawberry fig.

Jimmy,

What do you mean by ?? after the name of the figs. Do those spark your interest?

Someone must've supllied Almost Eden with starter trees, as Bissiri is a local outlet here in Philly. Mr Bissiri has been selling his trees for about 50 years, but as far as I know hasn't sold wholesale, so I'm guessing a memeber provided them. They have a nice selection. Good luck with your trees

They have quite a variety now. Several rare ones not commonly found in commercial nurseries.

Along with Durio, a good place for the newbie or rookie to expand out of the common starter varieties.

JD, I have a pretty good rapport with John from AE.  We've talked on the phone several times.  I don't know who provides him fig cuttings but I do know that he and Dalton have some of the same sources.  They both carry the Purple Passion fig that I sent you and nobody else has them.  I took a hunch buying some unknown figs like Delcon, Bissiri, and Red Italian.  I took a hunch about 3 years ago and purchase one of Bass's Ronde de Bordeaux and today it's one highly requested hard to find figs.   I am hoping his Red Italian, Birrissi and Delcon will be the same.  I have a fig addiction.    Hehehe

Rafed,

I put question marks (??) by the figs that I had never heard of or that I thought were mispelled. I did not realize that Red Italian was on the varieties list so I will remove the (??) from that name.

I am looking forward to seeing Dennis' photos. I am curious to see what the products (4" and 1 gallon) look like.

I sent John some of my named varieties, Salem dark, Salem white, Syrian white, Brooklyn white, brooklyn Dark. Bassiri 1 and 2 came from a Philadelphia member.

thanks Bass!  I figured those came from you.  It's all good!  Well here are the photos of Red Italian, Bissiri, Delcon, and Yellow Magnolia.
cheers,

I don't grow the others but I am certain you will be happy with the Bissiri

Just wanted to add that I had a good experience with Almost Eden as well.  John was great to deal with and I'd definitely purchase from him again. I'm also curious to see how the red italian and Zeke's black turn out. Anyone know the difference between bisirri #1 and #2?

I have them as Bissiri Dark and Bissiri White as they were sold to me, by Mr Bissiri, however, the white really isn't white or light as I would think. It is a kind of light purple brown, with a light interior. The dark is a smallish fig, very tasty. Not sure what the 1 and 2 designation means. I would guess they apply to dark and light as mine are, probably something Almost Eden applied to them

BLB perhaps in another new thread you one day can post picture of the Bissiri DARK one . It somewhat perked my interest last season but i was not sure if it need the wasp at the time.

Yes Martin be happy to when the fruit ripens. No wasp, it's been in Philly for over 50 years and is very fruitful, one of my favorites, even if it is a dark.

Good to know!  I guess I'll have to wait and see which one is "white" and which one is dark.

I had bissirri #1 & #2 but lost Bissirri #1 over winter. The bissiri #2 I have im pretty sure is the black one.

Bissirri#2 is on the left.

Hello Barry, Does Mr. Bissiri still sell these fig trees? And if so, do you have a contact number or address?

luke

The correct spelling is "Bisirri" pansy nursery  215-333-6755.
I sent Almost Eden some of those cuttings. I recently talked to John (AE) about the spelling of those cuttings

Thank you Ricci will change spelling on my tag.

I think we are both wrong on the spelling Ric. It's listed as Bissirr,i double ss and double rr I was spelling it with the double ss only.

I just called them. It is spelled Bisirri. That is what the person said, who answered the phone.

I made a visit there today and picked up a black and a white. Or if Bisirri#1 and a Bisirri#2. I talked to the grand daughter and she knows nothing about the names, only one is white and one black. She also told me she doesn't know how the white one even taste because she only eats the dark fig. The tagging of the trees are the trees with a basil tag are suppose to be white and no tag is a dark fig. Hopefully I have one of each. She was very friendly and to know more I would have to talk to her grand papa, who was napping at the time. If your thinking of getting one of these trees this year, they close at the end of this week for the season. I'm sure if you call the number and they have trees left they will sell them to you?? And they have trees left. Jazzbass is correct in the spelling, as I too asked to make sure.

luke

Forgot to ask, which one is what? Bisirri#1 is         Bisirri#2   Meaning which fig is dark and which is white???
