Figs just starting to fruit???

Which figs are late fruiters? Someone has asked me to come overhand look at their tree that is just now setting fruit.

Chris

That depends a lot on climate.

Vernino seems always to be late.

Maryland Berry, Strawberry Verte, 143-36, Black Mission, Paradiso, Italian Golden Honey, Mary Lane seem to be later here, but some of those are fairly early at other locations.

At USDA/UC Davis around September 1st, almost every tree in the orchard has ripe figs. Some are near the end of their season, and some are closer to the beginning of their season, but in the end, in a hot climate, they all ripen in a fairly small window - or overlap pretty quite a bit.

Jon,

Thank you for the list. This will give me a starting point when I head over there tonight to look at everything on the tree.

The guy say it has a smell as well??? I will report on that tonight when I get back. Never heard of a fig smelling as a trait.

Likely a Celeste that is putting on its second main crop. Probably dropped the first one. Is the tree in-ground?

Chris,

My experience matches Ruben.  It is possible that what you are experiencing is a "second" main crop when the tree did not produce it's "first" main crop.  I have several trees that are putting out figs now.  My trees got knocked back to the ground last winter and we had a hot and dry start to the summer.  I have not get much fruit from my trees so far this year.  August has been relatively cool and wet (operative word "relatively").  I got some nice growth on my trees and, yes, within the past two weeks several have started putting on a second crop with the new flush of growth.

Currently: Verdal Longue, Aldo, Golden Celeste, Atreano, Sanford, Armenian, and Black Mission have figs starting.  Aldo still has a fig ripening from the earlier crop on it (well as of this writing, I'm about to go pick it and eat it:)

As for the smell of cat pee, it is not uncommon.  The intensity varies among trees from pretty pronounced to barely noticeable.

Back Home,

Boy this tree def had a smell. Thought I was walking into a yard with tons of cats.

According to the guy, this is the first crop of fruit the tree has put on all year. Every leaf union had a fruit. I was able to grab a few limbs when I got there as he was literately prepping to chop down the tree. Have about 30 or so cuttings out of those branches.

The fruit however while still very young had a smell of peaches when sliced open. So smelling the fruit and the cat smell was interesting.

that is too bad.  if he cleaned up the extra growth from around the base, it would be a nice tree.  unless he digs up the roots, the tree will grow back.  If you can get the base of the tree with some roots, you can replant it and grow this tree.

James,

I am sure the tree is a goner now. They were determined to kill this poor thing tonight. The couple had already ripped out 20 - 30 year old Holly bushes that were of extreme quality. Who knows... I know I will have the tree's decedents growing here soon. All of the trimmings I grabbed are in rooting medium and resting for the night.
