First to ripen breba 2012: Flanders

First breba figs are ripening on my potted trees.  I was hoping Negronne would ripen the first brebas, but I'm not at all sad that Flanders is going to have one coming ripe in the next 48-72 hours, it seems.

Getting a lot of droop and hoping for something by Friday.  the main part of the fig is about as big around as a quarter.  Huuuuuge neck, reminds me of Longue d'Aout but it's literally half the size or smaller.  Pics:

Great looking fig, Jason.  And nice pics too.  Congrats!

Looks like one happy young fella there in that picture.  ; )

Noss, you are a riot! LOL

I sure hope it don't taste like one!  Way too long for BT though.

I started one from a cutting about three years ago but hasn't fruited yet.
Tell us how they taste Jason.

Well damn, what happened to the bald/shiny head comment, rafed?  ;)

The fatter one next to it is starting to turn color as well, we're going to try this one tomorrow eve.

I still can't believe how loooooong the neck is on these brebas.  I thought Celeste had a long neck, this is absurd.  This fig is probably 5"-6" long and no more than 1" in diameter at the fattest point.

LOL,

Jason, I thought it was wrong of me to say that so I deleted it.

Funny thing is just the other day I was thinking should I keep this fig or not? It is a very healthy tree for sure, but just hasn't produced anything.

While we are at it, did you notice any trace/signs of FMV on this fig?

If the taste is good it might be a hidden gem.

Something even Martin might enjoy.

Signs of FMV on this tree are present.  You can see it in the last picture, look at the leaf on the bottom left (deformed/mosaic).

The tree is sourced from Encanto.  I think I got it at end of 2010.  It's generally a good grower and it seems that it benefits a lot from up-potting.

I doubt Martin would enjoy this, not dark enough ;)  You know I'm fond of dark figs, and I'm not ashamed to admit when a lighter fig tastes stupidly amazing (see: JH Adriatic post #19).  I'll give you honest feedback.  I'm expecting a 5 or 6, but secretly hope for an 8.

nice looking figs. i haven't been doing fig thing long enough to see anything like that before.. they look rather long..

Ok, so I am late to post.

Keep in mind, these are breba, which seem to be much longer shaped and less jammy looking inside than the main crop (compared to Leon's previous post on Flanders).  The first one wound up being a dud, lots of flower, not much jammy pulp.  The second was better, if I waited another day or two the ants would have torn into it or it would've started to mold.

Minding that it's a breba and breba have (in my experience) often tasted inferior to main crop figs for many varieties... I give it a 3 on richness, a 3 on fig flavor and a 4 on sweetness.  That's judging on the 2nd one, the first one may as well have been an extremely bland Italian Honey or a very tasty Brown Turkey.  (FWIW, Celeste is at least 50% better than this, but I think the Flanders breba crop could actually make a tasty snack if dried)

My Petite Negra has breba shaped like these very long neck small fig, but of course Martin approved

I just tried a breba crop flanders from my tree this weekend. After a long wait an ok fig is better than nothing. However it tasted nowhere near as delicious as the main crop was last year. My main crop last year had a great sugary figgy taste that in my opinion was outstanding. For a green type fig I was impressed with the complexity of the flavor. However, I am in San Diego so I assume that climate may play a roll in the flavor. My tree also has FMV but it produces a lot of figs just the same.

Call it BLT - Brown Long Turkey or Barely Likeable Turkey.

Last breba for this year.  This was left on the longest and wasa the best breba of the bunch, but still wasn't that great.  This had more filuted brown sugar taste to it, but outside of that, nothing much.  Didn't look appetizing, tasted OK.

But thanks for being honest and sharing your pictures.

I ate it begrudgingly in the name of exploration.  ;)

looks good to me. i would eat it. i'm still waiting on breba from my VdB and KB to ripe. i think they will ripe around the same time as the main crops.
