Fooled

Has any one else been driving down the road and sees a leaf looks identical to a fig. You stop and ask the owner of the house about their fig tree and they say "what fig tree?" you say that one in your back yard. So they take you around back and show you. You get closer looks like an exotic fig leaf. The excitement grows as you approach the bush/tree the yard is um keept it's ok maybe it's a gem or even a bt would be cool with leaves like that. stupid Cup seed!!

Never seen or heard of them but I can see why from afar.

I have never seen that one before, I would go nuts too! You get an A for effort and don't give up.

Would have fooled me.

That is a cool looking plant, what is cup seed?

That's the type of weed it is

There are lots of these plants in Birmingham and on the side of I-65 South. First time I saw one was in the middle of Aug. I was perplexed by not seeing any figs on it. The smaller ones have white flowers.

I guess there are few verities of this plant around to first, get us (fig lovers) excited then confuse. It's a interesting plant that is not a fig tree but is nonetheless beautiful.

Pretty neat looking "weed"

LOL! Yes, I have!! Ran into that dang problem a cpl months ago. Fooled me too.

@Dan, "Cupseed" (Calycocarpum lyonii) is a vine. Looks like Paper Mulberry to me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_Mulberry - They grow wild all over the place and are annoying as hell.

Okra
Plume poppy
Helianthus

@Dan, I have been fighting off invasive asian Wisteria for almost 7 years at my house.  Some of the roots were easily bigger around than my arm, left totally unchecked.  I killed off all the kudzu after 2 years... that Wisteria is serious shtick.  I gave up on spraying it with Brush B Gon and Roundup.  I had some luck, but the second you mix it stronger than recommended, you end up shocking the plant and it goes into protective/survival mode and it does exactly the opposite of what you want.

@Alan, many varieties of Mulberry will be found and start small, then grow up.  White Mulberry, Paper Mulberry and Red Mulberry are the three most common.  They look very much like fig trees - hit Google Images and type in 'morus alba leaves', 'morus rubra leaves' and 'morus papyrifera leaves'.  Oakleaf hydrangeas are also easily mistaken for fig.

Mulberry and our Figs are related, both in the Moraceae family.  In my area, the leaves tend to yellow and drop at the same time for both.  In fall, they yellow and fall before anything else, so it's pretty easy to find figs in the landscape here.

I thought you guys down south eat kudzu and make jams out Of it? Do they sell that spray at hd? I ness to kill some English ivy too

Not jam, but jelly.  Tastes like a very flowery grape jelly with lavender overtones.  Beautiful color also.

Kudzu Jelly
4 cups kudzu blossoms, rinsed well
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
1 package Sure-Jell pectin
5 cups sugar

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Place blossoms in a large bowl or other container, and pour water over them. Refrigerate 8 hours or overnight.

Wash and sterilize 6 (8-ounce) canning jars with lids and bands.

Strain liquid through two or three layers of cheesecloth and discard blossoms. Stir in lemon juice and pectin. Pour into a medium saucepan and set over high heat. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Stir in sugar and bring back to the boil, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat and skim off foam.

Pour liquid into prepared jars, wipe rims, and screw on lids tightly. Invert jars for 5 minutes. Turn upright and let stand 24 hours before using.

You can also brew beer out of it ....

Fig + Beer= FEAR!
