Good old Belleclare last fig list

Edit: 05/06/2009:
For the sake of easy (reference) access to a complete the Belleclare fig list,
I am combining 2 text files into one BelleclareFigList.txt (BC # 1-85 & 86-104)
to the top of this thread. Please note that the fig numbering may be
different from any (older) but still existing BC web sites.

--------

Here is a scan of good old  Belleclare Nursery (LI, NY) last fig list, which I got
during  my November 2006 visit , just right  before they closed up shop.
I am sure that these will be a good future reference to many fig nuts.
George (NJ).
P.S. OK after an initial poor scan and  some more huffing and puffing, this is the
best I could produce (scanning). Also see post #6 below for  (a slightly modified,
but much better)  OCR version files.

See posts #6 (text files) and #9 (text list continuation).

Thanks George,
I was still able to view them.
Jon,
Is it possible you can add this list to the variety list you have online?
Perhaps some of us can provide you with photos of Bellsclare varieties if we have them.

Great find gorgi! Makes my mouth water just reading the list! Hopefully Jon has many of these available or soon to be.

Do you know Belleclare's source of so many varieties of figs? Do you have a way to contact "Chris", listed as the one to contact about figs?
Sue

Very cool.  Thanks George

Bass,

Yes, they can get added, and I have other lists to add as well. I am getting the pages ready in their new formats, and when I get the old info reformatted, and I can start adding new things, again.

Gorgi, if I can get scans that are a little clearer, I can OCR them, and save a lot of work. You can just e-mail them to me.

Nice to see them, even as they are. I don't think I had ever see the complete list.

Here is a plain (and simple) text version file Belleclare2006FigList.txt
Also Belleclare2006EtnicFigPaper.txt file (note some of the synonyms).
Used Jon' hint, downloaded some free OCR software and used it.
Worked great with some proof-reading/editing....
Notice the small size of the files (as compared with pictures).
George (NJ).
P.S. See post #9 (for list continuation).

Perfect.

svanessa,
BelleClare Nursery is gone... Period!  (Like Paradise Nursery...).
I was there, first time,  just before the BC closing its shop, and managed to
buy some (expensive) little figs both for me and another  fig friend in CA.
Sorry,  no further contacts available, guess that the DiPaola brothers
are really retired now.
George.

Thanks to Leon (of NM) ,  here is a  continuation of  the 'released' Belleclare
fig list #'s 1-85 (see post #6). Additional numbers are #86 -104. From this
continuation, I have #95 (see pic) and #102, so now I can assign BC numbers
to them.

I also have two others that I still do not see on any of the lists. A fig that has
the word "Piedmont(e)"  in it (Large Italian Purple with Red center); and
Fico Verde de Zucchini: Neopolitan Zucchini Fig, Green with Clear Center.
On the Zucchini, I do  have a good clue where it came from, but I'd rather
not mention names.

Also, as I posted somewhere else, another name for BC#17
"Italian Purple Red" is "Pop's "  in honor of  daddy  Dipaola which
he probably brought in his first suit case from Italy.

Can anybody (specially LI fig people) recognize/relate to any other of this
 fig continuation list?

Read the BC#100 note; there is an interesting experiment with a breba-only fig...

Thanks again Leon,
George (NJ).

Georgi, I know who you are talking about, and the answer is yes.

I have #98 (Corynth, very small) and have a friend who has #99 (Fico Zana)..

Thanks.

See my edited post #1 to this thread.
An "edit" does not seem to "highlight" as a new post does... Hence this post!

Number 93 seems interesting, has anyone tasted that particular fig that originated from Belleclare and if so can you described that.

Help, I'm confused.

On reply #6, second link.  The Belleclare Nursery list Royal Vineyard (#3 on list) as producing 2 crops and states it's a common fig.

On Figs4Fun it states that a Royal Vineyard is also called a Drap d'Or which I was under the impression was a San Pedro.  Both Belleclares and Figs 4 Fun show this as a brown, coppery, bronze colored fig.

Is a Royal Vineyard/Drap d'Or a common or San Pedro?

Cathy

Its a breba only fig unless you have the wasp for the main crop. Just like Desert King.

My understanding is that it is a San Pedro fig, which means it acts like a common fig when producing a breba crop, and like a smyrna type, needing pollination for the main crop. Mine has not fruited yet, so cannot confirm.

My Drap d'Or has had one breba so far, and produces a "common type" main crop.

The info about Royal Vineyard was taken from here. Please remember, Figs 4 Fun doesn't SAY anything. It is a compilation of info from 100s of sources, which is why there are so many footnotes. If the footnote number is (910), then the comments are mine. Otherwise, they are from some other source, and it is up to the reader to sift through the info and make a determination as to what is accurate and what is bogus (not very easy some times).

bump for interest.

What stinks is the fact that this place was on LI forever and it closed only a few years back. I would make a bet that most fig enthusiasts or those that grew up with them, never heard of or knew of this place.

Only 30 miles from where I grew up-Sucks!

Timing is everything.

Bump due to the recent Belleclare interest.

Thank you George for compiling the list

Jon, when looking at the links the other day, I didn't see this list linked to the Belleclare section.  Maybe it got overlooked with so many updates going on at the same time or maybe I just missed it...

Same as #?

Large, Greek purple-black, red center (Perkounis) from the island of Mikonos. This one ought to knock your socks off fro you have the right climate for this. It grows well and produces [in' really hot climate. This one was originaly a class II San Pedro type producing large brebas only. Main crop was only females so none of the figs would develop. After experimenting with growth stimulant sprays containing a hormone to inducing specialty flower to become large for exhibition, Belleclare sprayed this into the eye of the female fig at halfway point of 28 day cycle and seven days later. As a result, a main crop was produced because the spray mimicked the male hormones. This occurred several years in a row and then Bellclare stopped for three years in a row and during that time, the tree adapted and produces self-fertile main crops. The hormone spray came from edible Landscaping, Afton, Virginia.
