Pleas help ID Moms tree

Here are a couple of pictures of my Moms fig tree - it is over 80 years old and was pruned heavily this past spring.  She said she doesn't remember when it had so many figs!!  they are small and dark purple - sorry I don't have a picture with a quarter for reference or the outside of the fig.  I was thrilled she took these!!

There are more pictures but they are larger than 1mg and I am having trouble getting them off photobucket to paste here.  Is it me?  Or is it a Firefox thing?

I went into IE and added these - I have more but couldn't get them onto the message!!!!  This is a bit on the annoying side.  Sigh........

Thanks!!

Bump  :)

a sweet fig under the Holly..omg, why holly?

Hi JoAnn being a newbie yet , I don't have a clue . But it sure is a pretty tree , figs look wonderful , love the red and I love that it's 80+ yrs old !!!

Joann, it might help it you could synch up with a forum friend in your area. They might be able to help identify it next year.
I have the same problem. I think I found an old Black Ischia fig with no FMV. But I can't prove it.

joann,

that is a lovely tree :) and wonderul looking figs also.

Thanks for the bump Bob;)

Dennis, she is 1600 miles away (so is the tree lol) so I don't think a forum friend here will help her there.

Grasa, the holly is on the other side of the fence and on the east side of the tree. If my memory serves well it doesn't impede on the trees sun light too much if that's what you are worried about. After 80+ years in the same spot, I think it will be OK.

Pattee, the tree - and Mom - are up in your neck of the woods on LI. She is on the north shore - with the tree ;)

Pete - thanks! I haven't been up close and personal with it in over 20 years, but I do have fond memories picking figs with Grandpa, Mom, Dad and alone!! Brush the ants off and I'm good to go. I do remember the tree being more tree like with a single trunk. My Dad had an accident years ago so the annual wrapping of the tree my not have happened the way it had been done in the past. Either way it is a nice tree, good figs (they are one bite), and it's been my families tree for a long time.

I have never seen signs of FMV - never heard of it till I joined the forum. The figs start ripening in late August.

Not sure about photobucket, but here are a couple of options:
a) if the add'l photos are publicly accessible on photobucket, just paste some links to them here.
b) if you get them onto your computer off of photobucket (there's got to be a way to do that), then you might have to resize them to get them onto here.
c) there are lots of ways to resize photos:
     - I use Paint (and click on resize, use percentages and maintain aspect ratio, then save the smaller picture).
     - here's a link with a couple of other ways to resize photos:  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Resizing-photos-5095786?highlight=resize+photos

Just offering the thoughts in case they help you get more photos, which might help other members with ideas about ID of your family's fig.

joann,

a tree that's 80 years old has to be good. otherwise, it won't be there any more :) i bet it tastes great. the picture of inside is nicely red. love that dark red.

Jo Ann was there any reason you don't have this tree growing where you are ? An 80yr old tree that has family history /memories as it does and tastes good . Am I assuming too much , maybe you have it already?

I just love trees with history and makes it even more special if it has your own family history.
I was told my paternal grandparents brought fig trees with them when the came from Italy , but through the years they were lost . I was very young when they died. I would have loved to know what variety they were.

Hi Jo Ann,

            I use
Shrink Pictures. to resize all of my pic's for FB and here . you can load them from you computer directly to the site no photobucket  required.

Thanks for the tips to resize - I will give it a shot.

Pattee, I purchased my tree this past winter and created a garden. The plan was (operative word - was!) to have a garden with the fig tree in the far corner from the house so I could see it from my dining room window. Pretty simple. Have one tree and that would be it. Well...... after being on the forum for a while, (and insisting to myself that I would have just one tree), I kept reading all the posts from the members and looking at their pictures, a member suggested getting a cutting from the tree for myself. I gave in a tried to root some cuttings my Mom sent, unfortunately the first few did not make it. I also failed with some other cuttings.

My plan has evolved to add a fig hedge to the back yard. We have rear entry garages in my area (I know, it's weird), there is a small street - an alley, behind the houses where the garages are and where trash is picked up. Could you imagine a developer putting in a second set of streets in the back of the houses on LI?! Land costs too much up there to waste it on a second set of streets!! After being here for 20 years I have become used to it, though I would not want it again. I have pictures of the backyard before the garden in my earlier posts if you'd like to see what I am working with.

Anyway, I'm thinking of a fig hedge in the back with a variety of figs - family tree included! I am better prepared for cuttings this time around so I plan on being successful in the rooting department.

There you go Jo-Ann - sounds like a fantastic plan. One fig tree? Yeah right hahaha, nice try ! After being on this forum no matter what the time frame- one is just not an option !
Love the fig hedge idea and would love to see pix.
I'm trying to get a plan together for our FL home - thankfully not much planted there so digging and discarding not a problem. A man made lake/pond at back of property and we have our backyard fenced. I'm still not sure as to whether I'll plant in ground or pots as yet. Have snakes to contend with and I hate snakes ! So I'll pot for a while before I make any fig in ground commitments .
Eventually I'd like to grow pomegranates and other fruit trees.

Mike - Thanks for the paint tip!!  All I had to do is open it in paint then save it, and it changed the size automatically!   Correction - I had to re-size one!  I can't thank you enough - I just have to remember for the next time lol.

You're welcome Jo-Ann.  I'm glad it helped.

The leaves in the first picture (the one on the left) look familiar, but I can't place it at the moment.  Maybe tonight when I'm able to give it a bit more thought.
