USDA / UC Davis Orders

December1st is the drop dead date to order.

You can place your order online through GRIN at http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/acc/acc_queries.html by entering the DFIC number in the "Accession Identifier" box and then and clicking "request this germplasm" under "Availability".

That way is really confusing to me (edit: until I read post #4 below and walked through as explained in post #6 below, but please see post #10 below before trying that method instead of the one in this post!!).

I'll add this old-school method and hope you're not offended, Jon ;)

First, you'll need a FedEx account - they're free.  Sign up at http://www.fedex.com to get your account and thus your account number.

To see what figs are available from UC Davis, click here:  http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=12871

Download this form (right-click/option-click the link and choose "Save as"):
http://www.ars.usda.gov/SP2UserFiles/Place/53062000/NCGROrderForm01.doc

Fill out the form using the info from the fig catalog for cuttings you want.

Complete the remainder of the form, including your reason for requesting the cuttings, and follow the instructions in the form to send it to Bernie Prins.

Pro tip:  Request an email confirmation that they received your form; this way you're potentially not left hanging.

Like Jon said, you MUST submit the order by December 1st to get in for this year's cuttings.

Expect that the Fedex charge for domestic shipping will be between $15-$45 depending on your location.

PS - here is a sample of what a completed form should look like, with the Accession#, Genus, Species, Cultivar and "form" filled out.

In the case of ficus carica, you're requesting "Scionwood".  Other genus/species may require "Budwood".

If you need an example of what the figs listed look like, reference the ever-helpful Figs4Fun Variety database here:  http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html

Thank you!

Jason,

No offense taken. This was meant only to introduce a new way to place an order, which we were introduced to while visiting Davis this summer.

It is a little confusing, at first, but once you start working with it, it is straightforward, there is a place to enter your shipping info, and you can have it automatically send you a confirmation e-mail when you submit the order.

You add your first item, then hit the "new search" near the bottom, and look up the next item, and add that, and so on.

You can also specify shipment by UPS, UPS Ground, FedEX Ground, etc. which are considerably cheaper.

Note: no matter how you order your scion, it goes through a manual re-entry process at the USDA Office at Davis, so there is a eyes and hands on aspect to every order.

Another thing to add to what jon said, the grin is updated with new varieties. Not for figs at this time but for other plant material there are many photos and info on different varieties of prunus, morus and others.

Ok, so it seems like the thing to do is click Jon's link, scroll down to the Accession Identifiers section and under the "Non-PI identifier or range of identifiers:" table, choose DFIC (for ficus genus) from the long list.... then enter 0000 to 0099 in the two boxes next to it, then hit SUBMIT (it only shows 100 results at a time, so you'd need to do 0000-0099, then 0100-0199, etc.)

On the search return page that is returned, click on one of the DFIC linked results, and if you want that variety, click the "Request this Germplasm" link under the Availability section.

After you request the last cutting you want, stay at the return page showing your "cart" as it could be called, click the link to "Complete the germplasm request and order the material." link and fill out your information.

It looks like they don't require a FedEx account # using this method, which is strange, not sure how they ship it otherwise.

Wish I would have realized this before, they do have some accessions that I wanted but didn't order, and they already confirmed my order!  Oh well.  I'll go with what I got.  No need to be greedy :)

It isn't that hard. Print out the accession list HERE. Figure out what you want to order. Go  to fill in your order. Near the top is "Simple Queries". In the "Accession Identifier" box, type "dfic###". "dfic" is the designator for ficus ("dpru" is for prunus, etc) and then 3 digits for the accession number. The accession numbers are often listed as 4 digit - just drop off the leading zero. The list shows, for example, dfic0070. You enter dfic070. Click "Submit Simple Query", and you will see an info page for the variety. scroll down to "Availability" and Click "request this germplasm". You will see a page that lists the item you ordered, and after you enter a second item, it will show all of your ordered items.

Then click the small "search for more accessions" link to add additional items in the same way. After adding all of your items, click the "complete the germplasm request..." and fill in your shipping info... and click "Submit Order" at the bottom.

I received a copy my e-mail.

do they actually have all ~195 or so accessions available?  every one i clicked through on had a link to request the cutting, but it's not clear if every one is really available.

Jason, not sure, but probably not.

Just to complete the circle, I sent some additional instructions for my order, and I got an e-mail back saying they had no order from me. So, I guess the final answer on this method, is to e-mail them after ordering to verify that it got there. Got to love it.

Or just use the form as indicated ;)

I already got my email confirmation and my order number!  So I guess I'll hope to get a decent turnout on the cuttings in the image I attached above.

Just a quick reminder:  Deadline for ordering plant material is this coming Wednesday.

I sent them a copy of my GRIN order, and they were cool with that. I got a confirmation e-mail yesterday.

Placed my order in  April 8th and received confirmation number August 25th for 1 type only  after seeing pictures of there orchard and particular tree i doubt once again i revceive this particular scion.
But worth a try anyways 1 year i may be surprised !
