Eden,
Nice pics. Any idea were the locations are? Looks like Europe possibly.

  Thanks,
   Pete

Yes all pics. are from city call Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Eden

How is the climate in Bosnia? What are the average Winter temps?

Reason why I ask is those figs you posted seem to be very tough and hardy. I can see these figs growing unprotected here on the northern climate.

Here is pic. of Mostar

Rafed yes they are very hardy figs. This year Mostar had about 3 feet of snow and the temperature fell to -12 C in the summer is about +40 C. The most widespread variety is Tenica and it could be promising variety for you in the north. Here is some pic. of this variety.

Marseilles vs black was taking -4F,which is in the range of -19 C,so yes figs are hardy.
As for the figs growing off building those are mostly cauducous type ,it grew from seeds,so they will not readily make fruits without pollination.
What is interesting is that the fig wasp survive in Mostar, tho is quite cold compared with Central California.

Nice Pictures. The one shot from the river showing Mostar in fair weather should be made into a puzzle. That photo is awesome. Reminds me so much of Europe. The fig pictures show once again that life given any kind of chance will live. Thanks for the photos.

wow. impressed.

Herman I'm not talking about the fig trees that grow on the wall. I was talking about well-known cultivar that grows even more north of Mostar in town call Konjic where it can be much colder. Konjic is  mountainous, heavily wooded area, and is 268 m (879 ft) above sea level where temperature can get to -25 C . Tenica is self fertile not like other varieties Petrovaca and Crnica which need wasp to produce fruits. I have see Tenica fig trees as north as  Sarajevo  which hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1984.

Hi Eden,
Do you have any trees of the Tenica variety?  It sounds quite interesting... if a self-fertile tree survives to -25C, I would like to try growing that one here.  Do you know of a source where I could buy or trade for one?

I got you Eden,It is interesting the news about Tenica, and good news for fig lovers in the Northern climates.
I hope it spreads here in the US soon so other people will have a chance to grow it.

I hope to get some cuttings this year so i can share with you guys, it will be interesting to compare this variety with other hardy fig trees up north.

Sign me up for a cutting!

Navillus this city is so beautiful together with Athens it is sunniest place in Europe.

Eden,

Your city is beautiful! Fantastic pictures! Tenica fig looks very good too. Thanks for posting.

Unfortunately I'm from the colder parts of Bosnia 50 miles north of Sarajevo, But Mostar is my most favorite city Venice of Balkans. Figs and Pomegranate grow there like weeds.

What a beautiful city!!  It's amazing where life will take root!

See this video, and all the figs out there.

Very nice,
Thanks for sharing with us.

Great video, Eden!  It's great to see a country with such a war-torn past seem so peaceful now.  It does make you wonder if Bosnia would be a source of great fig varieties previously unknown to the wider world.

Yes,
Figs tend to grow in some weird places.
Specially, if they have their right local enviroment
(there, they do not specifically care much about soil).

Here is one I encounterd last year.
Some Cliffhanger!
A little ~2-3 feet fat dwarf fig tree hanging down from a small cliff and full of them good figs!

Yes, I do have a starter rooting (GM#176).

I hope so Rewton Unfortunately many need wasp to produce figs but few of them  are self fertile including Tenica.
