A Big and Old fig tree

The tree was discovered by Simon (Elfarach) but I was the one with a camera [smile]
It looks really old and well taken care of. The figs must be very tasty otherwise why bother, right?
Almost every branch is supported, and some grow over the walk.
We have not talked to the owner (but will) and do not know the variety (if it’s known anyway). It does not look like a Black Mission common around here. There are a few brebas and many main crop figlets.
Enjoy!

Nice!  Looks like it has a touch of FMV!  Also looks like they want reachable fruit, so the tree isn't grown high.  Just wide!

Thanks for sharing!

Amazing tree!

Nice sidewalk tunnel

Thanks Igor and Simon. We all love to see the old survivors. Is it near you, Igor?

What a beauty. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful job guys. Many thanks for sharing. Truly one of a kind!

Thanks, guys, for your kind words!
Gary, it is within a driving distance.
I hope we can update with the tree history when we know more.

Hi greenfig,
That's a big mama !
If you find the owner try to ask for the age of the beast ... Looks like a 100 or 200 years old tree !
Not pruned to my likings, but still looks efficient !
I'm surprised that the branches over the walkway are not all cracked from people harvesting on the run ... and taking rogue cuttings !

Thanks for sharing. I am very glad that the current owners realized the value of the tree. I am sure the tree has seen far more years than the members on this forum.

that's a cool  tree ............. !

To bad you can't really grow figs in the ground here in zone 5 ................someday someone will find the magic fig that will survive -20f  ....

....doesn't hurt to dream .

Austin

THERE IT IS!!!
Great pics Igor but they really don't give the tree justice, not taking anything away from your photographic skills of course, haha. This is a beautiful tree, the size of the trunk alone makes you go nuts wondering how old this beast could be.
Hopefully we'll be able to get some info on it soon, more than just the color and taste. Unless that house had been in the family for generations, we might not know where it came from or the age.

Now THAT'S a fig tree  :)

Wow that's an old tree

That tree's got  props!

Igor & Simon... great find, someone has been taking very good care of that methuselah of fig trees.  Reminds me of old days growing up in Los Angeles, where trees like this one were not uncommon.  My grandma had one (think Mission) that was so huge, it was our climbing tree as kids.  Wonderful fruit too!   Who knows how many may have survived the years, obviously the one you encountered that has.

Thanks for the post and photo.
