English Brown Turkey

I have no doubt that that is a good tasting fig. The purple stain (discoloration)  on this fig's "meat" that I see in the photo is a tell tale sign of good flavor development.

Well, where did you get it from Nelson? And can I get the same one here in the US somehow? I would love to grow that one.

Brent I got this fig at a local garden centre. The owner told me the person who sold him these plants & Paradiso "Nero", Kadota, Peter's Honey & Black Mission is a fig & Grape collector who takes his collecting personal. He wouldn't tell me his name but I have a feeling our loca fig guru "Adriano" knows this guy personally.  If I find out any other details I will keep everyone informed. Unfortunetly they sold 50 plants in 6 days so hopefully next year they will have more for sale I belive plants were $22.00 and worth every penny.

It is English Brown Turkey,there must be more strains of them,Mine was also beautifull looking,but it does ripe slow(one,by one,i)in my climate.
It doesn't mean the cultivar is bad,it surely mean my climate is not enough good for getting them ripe faster.

Nelson, nice looking fig. I am sure it was excellent. What amazes me is that, last year I bought a EBT from EL and the figs didn't even look anywhere close to what you have. Plus they tasted insipid. Maybe there are more than one strain of EBT out there.

Hi Navid, I too have EBT from EL also purchased last year and it does not appear to be an EBT at all in fact I have yet to see a 5 lobed leaf on my tree. Most of the leaves are 3 lobed or leaves that look like a boxing glove or mitten. No figs yet either and plant will find a new home shortly.

Nelson, I don't remember how the leaves looked liked on the EBT that I had. But, I practiced some grafting techniques on it then it found a new home in my trash can. Never had any luck with any of the EL's trees.

Grant leaf on yours looks Identical to the Celestial I had from EL I discarded that plant last season after dropping the 2 dozen figs it had.  My EBT from EL has mostly 3 lobed leaves with some single lobed leaves so far not one 5 lobed leaf it will also be finding a new home shortly.

Navid so far the only figs that I purchased that are doing rather well is my Petite Negri definately keeping it the flavour was awesome, my Texas BA-1 no fruit yet but has been a slow grower I do have VDB from EL & Sal's via a friend from the forum and these two are also very productive and will be keeping both. Also have a St. Anthony marseilles from them that is also been growing very very slow.

Discarded figs from EL so far are Celestial, LSU Purple & EBT will be going soon.

Nelson, does it look like all the figs will ripen, that are on the plant?

I looked at the varieties pages, and the pictured Celestial unripe fig also looks like the one I left on the plant.  Whatever it turns out to be, I will keep it at least until I taste one of its figs.

Bob, It really depends on the weather right now its been ripening 2-3 figs per week there are still atleast a dozen figs on the tree I already removed all the smaller figs. I should of removed some earlier as I am afraid I am exhausting the plant a bit we shall see though I would say most will ripen for sure.

Grant, it is possible its a celeste  sure let it fruit first and then you will be able to see if its alteast a decent fig.

This Topic was one of my first references in my search for clarification of the "Brown Turkeys".
What percentage ripen before dormancy? I have the same problem with English Brown Turkey as Herman2, they ripen one at a time, and I lost more than 50% due to the beginning of cold weather last year. Thanks.

Nelson I have a brown turkey as well, the guy that I got the cuttings from in texas, said it was a texas everbearing.  It does not look like the texas everbearing that I find on the web.  Today I went out and picked 38 figs, weighing on average 34 grams each.  All total was 3.3 lbs.  The fruits are rounder than yours, with little to no neck.  They get that purplish colour as yours and they are very sweet and Honey Dew Melon tasting.  They weep honey from the eye constantly and it taste like a honey syrup.

Nice figs Nelson.  Congrats.  And I'm glad to see another EBT fan in the northeastern part of this continent.  The strain of EBT that I grow is also able to ripen figs in this climate (though it's more reliable at ripening breba... don't always get the main crop early enough to ripen).  I like the taste of the breba as much as the main crop. 

A reminder to all:  English Brown Turkey is significantly from those other figs that have the words "brown" and "turkey" in their name.  It's kind of a shame that the names are so similar, because I think that EBT figs bear little resemblance to the various kinds of Brown Turkey... completely different fig.
