When we settled here in Yuma, AZ over 8 years ago I received, as a house warming gift from an old gardening friend, a 2 year old potted Brown Turkey Fig. I planted it in a S.W.facing corner of a cement block wall and it has thrived there, rewarding me with 100's of delicious figs. I since have added a Peter's Honey, Conadria, Kadota and a Panache. All green/yellow skinned varieties.
Two problems here in the Yuma area with the IBT figs; 1)We have a healthy population of Mockingbirds who love fruit, esp the dark BT's as they ripen but seldom bother the green varieties hence my other trees. 2) After our summer monsoon season, late July into August, we have a nasty little dried fruit beetle that enters open eyed figs (IBT's) and leaves behind a fungus that quickly rots the fig. I often lose 4 out of 5 late summer BT figs.
My project this year: I have pruned my original BT to create a sturdy scaffold of limbs that I can graft onto. I have up to 10 limbs that can be used for this and I am asking F4F members for their help.
If you have a green/yellow/white, closed eye, variety that you like and can spare 1 pencil to finger sized cutting I would like to hear from you. I would work with you to pay for shipping and reasonable costs. I will tag and photo each one and update each outcome.
I have had the best results, in the past, with 3-5 inch limb tips with the terminal &1-2 buds, but can work with most cuttings with 2-4 buds. We don't really have a dormant season here, rather a 2 month slow down. My trees, in general start to break out in late Jan - very early Feb and I like to graft before then. I am looking forward to hearing from members with proposals, thank you, Steve, sdpops
