A Cutting Dilemma. Which end is up?

Bob was kind enough to include 4 Desert King cuttings in my order.  They have girth, but no tips.  I have no clue which end should be buried, and which end should be up.

I'll probably do my usual thing, bury them horizontal 1/2" below ground, and wait till they sprout.  Let them grow for a while, then separate.  But I really wish I knew which end is up!

They all look right side up in the  pic to me.

I really hope I got it right.  Went outside, checked where the leaves grow, actually lower than the ring, so I used that as my guide.  Some of those cuttings are = size, and I would think the tip end would be narrower than the bottom, but some of these are just equal width.

Look at the leaf scar.. There will be two scars the large scar is the leaf scar the smaller one on top is a fruit embreyo. Fruit sets on top of the leaf so the smaller fruit embreyo goes up. My son says he looks at the node ring most will have a slight upward growth to somewhat of a point. therefore pointing up.
from looking at your photo they all seem to be in the same direction pointing upwards....

So with no tip, will these actually grow?  I know they will, if I lay them down horizontally, leave them alone, and wait.

But I currently have them wrapped in paper towels in zip lock bag in our 80+ degree garage.  They are in the dark.  The hot dark.

Should I put a couple in perlite cups and a couple horizontally in the ground, and see who wins the race?

Suzi

They are all correct as pictured.  The bottom of each cutting is closest to the edge of the cardboard in the picture.   Your 95 degree garage is too hot. 75-85 is optimal.  For the future if you need help on which way is up show us the leaf scars on each cutting.  That's how we know  :)

Node line is on top of leaf/fig scar. That's towards the top. You really don't want tip all that much. From 26-27 cuttings I had 4 failed.3 of them are cuttings with tip/terminal bud. Having said that, one Black Madeira, 2 Calvert, and one Ischia White with terminal bud made it.

"Let search be your friend"- LMAO!!! Just kidding I wouldn't do that to you

There are two scares:
1. The big one (leaf scare)- you can't miss it, this one located at the BELOW the fruit scare
2. The fruit scare: this is located ABOVE the leaf scare

Your fig bud,
Jenn

Oh... Once you located the fruit scare the bud (which is itty-bitty) that will let you know which is end is up! Good luck :-) I had trouble figuring this out in the beginning too

OR...you could lay it flat and bury it just a little.   Then it wouldn't make any difference.

Centurion!  You rule!

Suzi, I have nothing to add, but good luck with your cuttings. :)

Keep us posted.

Suzi the leaf scar needs to look like its smiling if its has a sad face it upside down very easy way to figure it out

Well you asked which end was up but her idea is way.. easy :-)

Jenn

I hope your not referring to me???? I'm a him not a her lol

Tony, that's a great way of looking at that. Sometimes when I look at cuttings, when we have a fistful of cuttings, gosh it is no wonder my eyes get crossed! "happy face" "frowny face" nice, I will take your advice. Thanks bud

P.S get it! I said "bud". I'm so lame

Ha ha ha that's funny  (bud)

See pix at Cuttings

Wow, Jon!  See, that perfectly illustrates my worst fear!  Getting it wrong!

Thanks so much!  That was helpful to me, and to others I am sure!

I really want these cuttings to live, and now I'm pretty sure now I know which end is up!  Today, I already laid the slimy green one into the dirt and covered it with loose soil.  The other three will go into a perlite/potting soil mini-greenhouse with my fingers crossed. :-)

Rookie, you may want to start a new post with a title or do a search - you will find the search link above your name on the top right

Rookie, go to your profile in the control panel, and put your location in there, so we know how to help you.  In the signature section, put the names of the figs you are growing, and the cuttings you want.  This is an important feature to help us help you.

Suzi

Also, Rookie, post photos of your leaves.  What kind of dish soap did you use?

Everytime you guys say Rookie I think your making fun of him or yelling at him  I know your not but i just cant help it...Rookie I would like to welcome you to the forum I have some local unknowns when you get your tree all straightened out maybe we can trade. Good luck with your tree these guys and gals are good there seasoned pro's take there advice and go with it.

Here are pictures of the cuttings in their mini-greenhouses.  Hopefully they are right side up!  The 6 Sicilian Reds, of which 2 are tiny, all have growth tips, so I KNOW they are right side up.  I'm pretty sure I got the 3 Desert King's in correctly too!  They are in 3/4 pearlite and 1/4 sterile seed starting soil.  They were soaked and drained, the 2 liter empty water bottle with the bottom cut off - greenhouse pressed in so no air can go there, and I expect to see roots coming out the drain holes soon!  They are in the shade of the patio, and the temps are around 85 degrees in the shade.

I like putting the dates planted on them so I know exactly how much time has passed.

The green Desert King cutting arrived with rotting ends, so I cut them off, but it was really slimy this morning, so I laid it in the dirt, and I'm hoping for the best.
