A Fig producing Celeste Pix + count

Hi everybody,

Well this ain't about some xtra rare two of a kind fig but it is a BIg winner here!
Edit  The figs in the bucket amount to 464 the pail is a 3 gl. one.

So far we have picked 830 figs off it, the thing will most likely last for 10 more days this season.

The tree is 40 + years old! Does not drop figs period.
EDIT I added photo of tree, my little wife and the owner

Cecil
That made all the efforts worthwhile. Time to enjoy.

You are right Ottawan

Except it is not our tree....I can only wish...But I have some green cuttings that have little roots...Fingers crossed.

Thannks...Hope you are feeling great!

Cecil Noss may have an interest in that fig you mention.
Gee you counted 464 and also 830 i would have lost count after 30 . lol

Hi Martin,

I know about Noss being interested in that Celeste..Her name is all over them cuttings/plants

Mom picks them, I count em
First day a measly 38
second day 328
today 464 (she picks them every other day.

Regards

Thats nice of you Cecil as i been reading for a good while about Noss and her Celeste tree always dropping the figs.

I know, I just hope the baby celeste is like the mother tree!

The man that owns the tree has gave the wife free range of the tree, only thing he wants is a few jars of the fig preserves.

That is so cool to see that many ripe figs. I hope to have that problem some day. I love processing fruits of all kinds. :):)

Hi Gina,

I know what you mean about wishing you had that kind of luck with your trees

Me Too!

Cecil, that's a great tree. In general, how hot has your weather been recently?

Looking good, Cecil. Celeste is a very tasty and reliable tree here in Virginia as well.  Enjoy.

That's a nice tree.  I wonder if it has ever been frozen down to the roots and resprouted.

@ Chapman, I really don't have an answer for you other than it got down to below zero for about a week in the 80's
@ Vaplantman Thanks.
@ Tucsonken It has been really hot here (it got up to 104 F already this year.(And it never rains here in the Summer, well hardly ever)
I will also add that the owner of this tree never waters or fert. this tree.
@Noss...You are too sweet with the kind words.
Regards

A little update

Today 6-29 we (Wife) picked 348

total so far 1178 Yaaaaaaa

More later!

Well,I hope Vivian trial this tree in her backyard and see if it drops fruits or not.
If it does not, then we can be sure there are many strains of Celeste and most of them have a bad gene making them drop.
If the tree drops in Vivian Backyard, then there is something in the soil or climate that the cultivar does not like, that will be the only explanation.

Thanks Herman,

As always we value your fig savvy! I too was thinking along them lines! Really was.

I am going to send you an email shortly.

Regards

I'd love to know how your wife makes fig preserves Cecil!
Never had it! Sounds delicious!

Hi Dan796

She uses this recipe (link attached) one of dem good Cajun recipes1

EDIT>    the Wife cuts the sugar back from 8 cups to 5

Holy Fig!!  Nearly 1200 and counting!!

My "Celeste" fig looks nothing like those!!  I started a post for it.

JoAnn

Last year the wife used a ladder and picked a little over 2400 off that tree, I put my foot down on her using the ladder any more, I was worried she might break something important!

Edit   JoAnn I sent you a PM

Noss, it is the same tree.  That was the breba, I started a thread with main crop fig.  It looks as though it came from a different tree!  The main crop tasted OK, about the same as the breba (I think, I've slept since I ate the breba lol).

If it's not a Celeste, that's OK, I just want to know what it is, and if it improves over time then I will have something to trade!

Cecil, it sounds as hot and dry there as it is here, so maybe my young Celeste will toughen up and stop dropping fruit once it's a little older. It's heavily mulched and gets enough water to keep a fish happy, but the figs still dry up and drop.

Do the figs from your neighbor's tree have a closed eye?

@ Ken

Yes on closed eye

BTW...I have had Celeste that drops its figs too, This one DON"T

EDIT>   Ken if you look at the pix I posted if you look at the 1 o'clock position it shows a good view of the eye.

Another update!

The wife picked 460 today !

Total so far and still counting 1638..Why don't I hear a guy from Ga. and one from South_ Fla. laughing NOW?????

Also Tucsonken I took a pix of the eye today.

Looks tight enough to stop any bugs. What a great tree--enjoy the harvest!
