A good day

  • jtp

I checked Craigslist this morning and found an ad for free figs. I called the guy, who had three big trees in his front yard. He said there were far more than he cared to consume, so come and get them. They were nice Celestes, but the birds had taken their share and a lot were already rotting.

At any rate, I ended up grabbing about 10 lbs. of figs that I did not have when I woke up. This made for enough in the freezer for a few future pies and a balsamic fig mustard glaze for the pork roast I have in the oven currently.

SWEET!

Ok, I'm totally jealous!

Nothing wrong with 10 lbs of free Celeste. I am eating some
everyday myself. SWEET

Nice, enjoy!!

I never apologize for Celeste. It's called "Queen of the South" for a reason. At times, I think everyone (me, certainly) gets caught up in the exotic, next-big-thing figs and overlook the less sexy, common ones. Figs like Celeste, Peter's Honey, Mission and Hardy Chicago can all be found pretty much everywhere, but that broad availability does not mean they are not good. And having them as a baseline just makes the fruits from more special trees all the more incredible.

Only ten pounds?  You have this guy pegged for next year, right?
