A Large Earthquake In California 8-24-2014

There was a large earthquake, 6.0-magnitude  in Napa, California this morning, which is not very far from Harvey. Is everyone doing OK? I think Harvey is fine. I wish everyone well.

Best,
Tam

As far as I know, everyone is OK, Tam. I woke up at 3:20 a.m., with my bed rocking side to side, and it didn't take long to realize what was happening. Life long CA residents know an earthquake when they feel one. I got up and checked, and all was ok at my place. Napa was hit hard, road damage, water and gas lines broken, no power, and lots of smashed windows. Only injuries reported so far were from shattered glass. Most of the affected buildings weren't occupied, thankfully, at 3:30 on a Sunday. Other than the lack of sleep, I think most are all right.

Hope everyone in the Napa area is OK.  6.0 is a pretty good shake, but early assessments suggest damage was limited.  Be safe, everyone!

I was in SoCal, driving home now. My wife also awoke but hasn't noticed any damage.

I remember a few quakes as a kid, living on Travis AFB.  Hope everyone is ok.

Hope everybody in the Earthquake area to be OK.
Harvey, be safe !

I am glad that all of you were fine. Thanks and be safe.

One thing that was surprising about this earthquake was it's duration.  My wife reported that even after she had awoke, checked our son's bedroom, walked downstairs and talked to the dog (she thought at first that the dog had awoken her) and then checked for reports on the computer, the window blinds were still shaking.  I read one news report which indicated the earthquake lasted 20 seconds but one reader responded and indicated they had shaking for two minutes.   That seems to be similar to what my wife experienced.

Heck, if the ground under my feet shakes; it is most probably an earthquake - run for-them-hills (just plain going outside maybe just fine)..

From the news, luckily no major/serious damage/deaths had occurred.

Some are predicting an overdue (CA) 'Big-One' though ...

As of late yesterday, I heard a hospital report that they had treated 13 people that were admitted, 7 with fractures, 1 still in critical condition.

Good to know you and the ohana are fine, Harvey.

Gary is probably the member closest to the action.

It depends on the timing but the best approach could be to hide under a table, away from the shelves and potentially flying objects. Some people do not run that fast without tripping over the random objects.
And if you fall, the fate might be miserable ... The chimneys are the most dangerous parts of the house.

This quake did not happen on the major San Andreas fault. It is a really old one off the quake highway.
The bad thing about it is that it did not release the stress in the region but probably increased it on some known faults, which makes the situation worse.

Harvey, make sure you have the water and food stored in a safe place. I am not trying to scare you, I am going to do the same today. This is the second noticeable quake in the recent time that was not on the San Andreas.

Two days ago I was sitting in the barrel room of a Temecula Valley winery far from the earthquake, and looked around at all the ceiling high stacked barrels.  Impressive.  I was with family.  Local vineyards.  But, if that quake struck during business hours many lives would have been lost from barrels crashing down.  Would not have been pretty.  Still not pretty.  Many small vineyards have lost it all.  My son is really busy now.  He did put insurance in place for his Napa customers (specialty vineyards), and most are his customers, but some didn't have protection in place.

My daughter in law works for the vineyard where we sat in the barrel room and enjoyed a glass of wine and appetizers... comped of course.  She was devastated by the thought.  This IS California.  We are known for shakers.

Not moving!

Igor, I'm pretty good with food and water.  My water is from my own well and I have a back-up generator which can power it and my entire house from a gas well on the farm.  My biggest risk in the event of a very bad earthquake is levee failure in which case everything here is pretty much lost (home might survive if the levee failure was during summer months as it already withstood a flood in summer of 1972).  My home is well below level of water in rivers and would be partially submerged for months.  Fig orchard would be lost, though that would be of minor consequence, relatively speaking.
