A little frustrating

bugs 9-21-13.JPG

I wanted to share a little frustration.   This season hasn't been the best growing for figs.  But on my oldest and most productive fig, my Celestial fig, it has ripened several dozen precious figs.   Here's the frustrating part.   The yellow jackets & ladybird beetles have found them and have been helping themselves before they can reach their peak.  They literally eat the figs to pieces.  I've heard of birds and squirrels, but haven't heard too much about how to protect against bugs.

Thanks

Search on organza.  There's a guy on ebay that will get them to you in 2 working days.  Yellow jacks have been the bane of my fruit until now.  Love to see them frustrated.  :)

Aren't the ladybugs supposed to be our friends by killing or eating other pest bugs?
Traitors!

As the saying goes: They smile at your face and stab you in the back. Tisk tisk tisk.

Anyway,
I might have found that first fig I did not like, Dan.

I recall yellow jackets feasting at my grandmother's pear tree. I didn't think much about ladybugs until you posted your observations. Then I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilachninae

Apple maggot bags work well also to prevent bugs from eating and getting into figs. They are simply a small nylon footy that you slip over the fruit and then wrap the open end around the stem once or twice to seal and secure. I bought a bag several years ago from Raintree to stop wasps from eating my nectarines but they apply well to any fruit.
