A mistry fig?

I had a visit today from a lady who used to live in southern Louisienna that had a figtree growing in her yard with  the name Stonewall Jackson, a large fig that has an excelent taste. She has never come across after that. I promise her that i would ask the Forum if anybody knows anything about this fig. She was very sure about the name.

Sounds like another case of someone sticking whatever-damn-name-they-want on their fig tree.

Yeah!  Ditto.

Maybe it is her pet fig tree with a name like that

Boy did i boo-boo! I hope you guys forgive me. I was hoping that when your new to a forum that you guys go easy. The fruit in question was not figs but oriental persimmon. I agree there are a lot of goofey names for all kinds of fruits, the lady was just curious if the fruit is still grown somewhere, sorry.

Hi Luak,
the fig Gods will forgive you.
The members will also
Lord knows i have made many in past .

Dieseler, where in the southside of Chicago do you live? I used to live on the southside also, in Lansing,Ill. I retired to Arkansas since 2000, i just got tired of burriing my fig tree's so i got to move. Are you still with the Nafex group?

Hi!  HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

Hi Luak and welcome to the forum,

Everyone here are great people, We are like an extended family. They don't mean harm.

Is there any way to where you can get pictures of the fig tree in question?
Maybe you can include the pics of the leaves as well?

Now I go back to my New Years Eve celebration.

Luak im near Tinley Park.
Nafex i never joined .

Noss its short for North American Fruit Explorers

Hello Luak and welcome!  We are just kidding you about the name.  It's all fun....nothing serious.  It is kinda funny though.  The name does sound like the lady gave the tree a pet name.

I met a little lady in the garden section of Walmart back in September.  She's 88 years young.  We got on the subject of figs and she said her mother had a fig tree back in the 20's.  She said it had a funny name and the fig were so good.  She said she loves to eat figs fresh.  So I offered bless her with one of my Sal Fig trees.  She was so excited.  You should have seen her face!  She said her husband passed last year and now she has to learn how to do everything by herself.  He was 90.   I told her come March I will come by, bring her tree and plant it anywhere she wanted.  When I plant the tree I will make sure it is triple labeled because I know she will give that tree a name like Stonewall Jackson too.  cheers,

I appreciate the fact that you guys don't mean harm! I feel much better now. I have been growing fruit tree's since the early 70's actually, which include the figs i mention before. In the times that i live in the Chicago area it is mostly pears, apples, peach, cherries, and that sort of things, now it is asian persimmon and pears,paw-paw's, more varieties of figs, plums. I only like to grow about 5 or 6 of each variety. Because i have so many american persimmon started from seed collected in 2002 and 2003 that those tree,s are good size now i am forged to graft the asians on to it. I am getting a whole lot better at grafting, thanks to the CitrusFormup.org group tutorials.I am building my little heaven on earth. When i cleared my 2 acres out of 5. i dump most of the branches in the lake by my boatdock and now i can eat fish all year long. I got a bassboat that i bought in 1996 to be used when i retired and it now has about 60 some hours on it, do not need it anymore. How about grilled walleye for dinner guys?

Oh, I mean no harm.  I don't think anyone was attacking.

It was very confusing.  In the title of the thread you mention an unknown fig, and in the post it mentions a fig tree named "stonewall jackson".  There was no possible way to know that "stonewall jackson" is a persimmon tree until you mention this in response #5.

There is a lot of problem with people giving trees whatever name they want.  This has bitten many of us in the butt at times, and it adds lots of confusion to an already confusing hobby ;)

I see this woman guite often because she comes in my Stainedglass studio often, and i will ask her some more questions. She seams very serious about it. Since it is a persimmon i will post it in the Garden Webb under persimmon. Maybe somebody knows anything about it. Personnaly i am interested in large oriental persimmon also.

We are in the same boat, i have an ancient starcraft 14ft flatbottomed out by me and a neighbor did with 2 swivel seats (long story) when first bought my brother in law almost fell in lake when it came apart off the deck it was poorly done. Powered by an oversize 1971 Johnson 20hp for boat size(used in Illinois river) and a totally rebuilt pro painted 1957 Johnson seahorse that i paid a fortune for.
Now its just me that fishes in the neighborhood as everyone else is to dang far away so it just sits in driveway.
Going to paint the boat next season and sell it.

You mention Walleye thats one fish thats hard to beat in taste and hard to catch least for me its my favorite.

Martin,

Come over in the Summer and I'll take you to Lake St. Clair for some nighttime Walleye fishing.
The first one I ever caught was 26.5" long. You should have seen me.

Martin, move to Atlanta, I need somoene to go fishing with nearby!!

I don't have any place to put a boat, and don't trust the inflatable that my dad gave me any farther than I can throw it.

Man, I need to buy a house with more property!!

I am going a little farther with my fish story than i go back to growing figs(ice cream with fig compote). On Beaverlake the water is clear and you can actually see the schools of large crappies, bass and walley etc. It is a beautiful side, right at my backyard. It just can get any better then that.

luak, Crappie you say, why there is no better tasting fish in the world for me. It's even good enough to mention on the fig forum. Beside growing things mostly figs, I like to crappie fish.
"gene"

I have very fond memories of fishing for speck off of bridges with traffic whizzing by at 50+ MPH as a kid!  Hanging a light off the bridge when pitch black and fishing with minnows.  You just brought back very good memories, Gene!
