A newbie thrill

  Here's newbie exuberance..    fireworks...   confettiiiiiii  .. because I have a small branch of an old fig tree in Senoia GA.  (Night of the Living Dead) films it there.  The house is 80-100 years old.   Ha ha  (the fig tree is giant and loaded with green figs.  I met the new owner pulling out of her drive away, but she told me "take what I want she does not appreciate a fig tree"   WOOOOHOOOO  I want her total tree! ! !.  ha ha .  So I pop off 12 inches of it and feel like I won the lotto.   Now  the suspense.. will propagation succeed?   Is the mother tree a relique or from Home Depot?   Did Rhett Butler meet a lady there for a snack of figs? :-)
 I love this. Believe me!

Congratulations!, Good Luck!, Pictures?
Thanks.

right on, keep us posted. and yes lets see pics

  Do to human error the pictures of the tree and the branch still intact with little green figs does not exist.   But I am invited to come back for figs when they are ripe. I'll take more pics.
  The black cuttings are wet but they are a dusty black even when dry. The green leaves grew from the tip so I know it was a live branch,
  It looks like nodes on the black cutting are 1/2 inch or less apart but could they be something other than nodes?  disease? The tree looked lush and healthy.
The leaves on one piece dried up over night even though they were in a glass of water. Probably not a good sign but as soon as my rootriot cubes get here I'll try to root every thing.  If those are truly nodes should I make a few more cuttings from it?

Congratulations on your find ! Exciting - hope it roots for you and it's a great fig !!

Soni,
Thanks for the pictures.
Green cuttings have an active vascular system and are not as strong as dormant cuttings. Remove all the leaves and place in a vase with about 1 inch of water, replace the water every 2-3 days, and shake daily (to keep the cuttings wet). Below is a picture of cuttings taken on 6/29/13 and rooted with the vase procedure only (a summer rooting method). They have already produced roots and are ready to be cupped. If using the Root riot cubes, make sure to keep the cutting moist or in a high humidity environment.
Good Luck

     IMO it looks like the old wood cuttings have been damaged from scale. I would isolate those cuttings.

@Gr8Figs,

   Thank you Barry. I'm very grateful for the info.  The cuttings are still in my kitchen in a vase. Hopefully I can treat for scale without spreading it. IDK if the total tree is infected but I could go back and look for better cuttings.  This branch I grabbed quickly as the resident was in her car to leave.
  This is part of fig education and  I appreciate it very much.
  I am still excited about that big, old tree and I hope I can start some good cultivars from it...the rare fig came on the Mayflower :-)

Soni if all fails you can go back if its a large tree look at ground level for suckers growing often they have roots and can be captured by digging under them and then severed.
Bring pot with damp mix of course to put into right away.
Keep in full shade.

@Dieseler           Martin,  thank you.
I'm going to let some of the stem surface dry and see if I can scrape off ,,or open any scales. My daughter will be back in the country less than 2 weeks and I will ask her to use her microscope for sure.  In the mean time the cutttings they are in solitary confinement in the barn !!!
   I am new to the South but a good attitude is " Tomorrow is another day"  Thank you Scarlett !!

Super exciting Soni! Great back story! You go!

You can also root green cuttings in soil. I crush the bottom end with my foot on the cement (or you can whack it with a hammer). This increases intake of water by the cutting. Use rooting hormone or not. It is up to you and certainly not necessary. I then stick the cuttings into pots of moist soil. Put the pots under a bush or somewhere shady and keep them moist. Some place half soda bottles over as a dome; I have not needed to do this. In a couple weeks, you should see new growth. I've yet to have one fail. Hope this helps.
