A Platter of Heaven! YUUUUMMMMM!

I know some of you are not too keen on Celeste, But this is the fig I was raised on and I think it tastes great. These were picked this morning and are a little larger than normal with all the rain, but still taste great.  Some were picked a day early, but am making preserves with them(gotta beat the birds). Also I have noticed that if they get rained on when ripe, they will spoil by the next day if not picked right after the rain. I'll share with you if you can get here before dark, LOL!

Tim those look great. I can't wait to be able to pick more than just one or two a day but it won't be long now. The MBVS is stating to ripen a few it has 27 figs on it last count lol what great strong grower

 Thanks again
Sal

That's great Sal, you are ahead of me with the MBVS, mine is not ripening yet. Let us know how they taste(as if you weren't going to,lol).

Nothing wrong with Celeste, Tim. They're my favorite, at least for now because aside from a couple of over ripe LSU Golds I tasted last year, and a few off of my LSU (not),  they're the only one I've tasted. I've been getting 8 to 10 off of my in ground Celeste every day. The birds were giving me fits for a while until I put one to rest Sat. morning. For the last two days they have left my figs alone. Perhaps it was only one bird with a fig tooth. Thanks for the pictures, can't wait to get home a snag me a few more.
"gene"

Gene, I know you can't wait for that tree to get large enough for a bumper crop. These were actually off mine & in-laws tree. Mine have done much better this year since I started watering & fertilizing them, but I like you are only getting a handful a day off each tree.. The blackbirds are giving me a fit--I went out late yesterday evening to look and there were at least 30-40 blackbirds all over those 5 trees, poking their beaks in as far as they could reach for figs. Some of the others that I don't have netted, I've been wrapping the figs with newspaper and securing with a clothespin. Those darn things have been tearing strips off the newspaper until they can get to the fig(they know what I have hiding in there). I guess I'll have to get the BB gun after them(maybe the neighbors won't notice)!

Tim,

Nice pics, Can't wait till I start picking some but looks like it's going to be a while for me. My brebas didn't make because of the late frosts we had here so I'll have to settle with nature and time.

As for the birds goes it looks like we'll have to do things the Old Fashioned Way, Get a Tommy gun!
Even if you miss them they'll still die of a heart attack. LOL

Celeste is a great fig. No need to apologize.

.Congrats Tim. .....this is making me jealous. I can only look forward to DK ripening late this month or 1st
week Aug. The weather this season have been too cool.

Oh man do I ever wish I had a platter like that, Yumm Tim your a lucky guy.

Thanks for all the nice responses!

Rafed, not sure what a Tommy gun is---I'll look it up! Hope you get to pick some soon.

Paully, I hope you get a break in the cool weather. It's hot here(90's), but cooler than the Northeast. Never tasted a DK, but I hear it's a good fig. I do have a Norman's Yellow which is similar, I think. It had a few brebas and I got to taste one---was not that great(2nd season). The birds beat me to the others.

Jon, I think it's a great fig too! Like Gene, was raised on that fig and haven't tasted any others that are better, yet. Maybe this season.

Nelson, wish I could send you a platter full---customs would seize them like they did the cuttings, lol.

Hahaha Tim this fall you will received them even if I have to drive to buffalo to make it happen lol.

Its nice top see a plate of figs like that this time of year for me.  ; )

Tim the Tommy gun is a sub machine gun invented back in 1919 by
Jon Thompson.
If you ever saw the TV series back in the 1960s (loved it) Sgt Saunders played by Vic Morrow used one, they were popular in the prohibiton era and used by various people.

Very nice plate of figs ! (jealous face lol)
Mine had 4 ripe figs when I came back from my trip but the ants had eaten half of them already, I guess my tree need very constant supervision...
By the way celeste is my favorite fig

Tim,

Tommy Gun;
.45 cal. fullauto machine gun ( 250 rnd mags. )
It's what the gangsters, bootleggers and the mob in the 20s and 30s used.

I believe it was made by Thompson Center.

Like I said, Even if you miss them they will for sure die of a heart attack!
No more birds or squirrels messing with your figs!

Well Rafed & Martin, that  45 caliber Tommy gun ought to get the job done, lol! Maybe I'll try firecrackers. Don't own any guns except a BB gun. Heck, Sherri would have killed me long ago, lol!

Alex, if you can find Tanglefoot which is applied to the base of the tree, it should stop the ant problem. Many on the forums use it.

Nelson, thanks bud, but I'd hate for you to have to go too far. The one bronze Paradiso cutting I got in a trade is growing fine now. But, I'm sure there are others I "need".

Picked another probably 1/2 platter full today and they are all in the preserve pot as we speak. I see warm fig preserves over buttermilk pancakes in the works.

Well Martin,

Looks like you and I share another passion

Yes its been a long time but there is an outdoor range an hour from me that one can bring a fully automatic IF he has a dealers license and shoot at targets in the mine pit and against the hill. They have several different area's there for different weapons. I enjoy the trap shooting and pistol range.

Keeping with figs, Celeste in my book are ok nothing wrong with them .
Tim i sure dont want to rush the season cause they ripen here late August thru month of September but its sure a pleasure to see pictures of them from folks trees.

Well Martin, I don't blame you about not wanting to rush the season. You guys have such a short one and then comes Winter. Hope you get buckets full!.
