a productive day.

double checked all my trees for scales. aerate them all. water them all, and moved 3 cuttings to cups. didn't get to root pruning today. i used all my pine mini and compost to over the ditch i made with my truck on the side of drive way. i'll root prune them next weekend along. need to get some more stuff for the soil mix to move some of the 3 gal to 10 gal.

Sounds like a good day Pete. When you root prune this early will you also up pot them?

if i get enough things for my soil mix, i might as well up pot them this time too. i don't mix fertilizer in the soil mix but top dress them, so it won't make many difference.

Pete, after pruning, do you seal the cut wounds?

nope. they dry up and seal themselves at next node.

Hi Bullet08,
Are your trees close to budbreak ?
if not, don't you fear to wake the trees by playing with the roots now ?
Do you replace the dirt with new dirt, or do you just cut the roots, mix the dirt and put it back in place ?
I would consider taking the opportunity to give some fertilizer to the trees .

no bud break. afraid they will wake early? nope. if they bud early, they bud early. usually they break bud around feb. here in my garage. so late jan. is a good time. i never mix fertilizer in my soil mix. i thought about it, but what's the point? they will leach out later on any way. i top dress once the trees are out of the garage.
