A spring for persimmons

Slightly off-topic here.
My Chocolate persimmon is so happy the spring is finally here! It is covered with flowers from top to bottom. I hope it will drop 98% of the flowers or it will collapse because of the fruit weight :(
1% is for squirrels (California TAX) and 1% is for me!

My Hachiya and Izu are not there yet, I think they need another 2 weeks before the flowers open which is great since the Chocolate pollinates many other varieties making them to produce seeds.

very nice picture.

Eukofios persimmons will grow in the portland vancover area. have fun

Ohh.  Please describe this chocolate persimmon.  Wish I had room and climate for persimmon.

It is hard to describe the taste... But I love it :), darkish inside, very sweet. Best fresh for me, astringent so you need to wait when it is soft. Very prolific, lots of fruit, lots of leaves. If you like Hachiya, you will love this too. Doesn't care about fertilizers, water or any kind of care. The best thing you can do is to forget it exists until the fruit is ready to eat! Basically, it needs the sun only.

Here is a link with photos and some description too:

I have tried several times to keep chocolate persimmon alive in our area, but always dies. It is not hardy even in mild winters.
You can see the male flowers in the picture.

Bass, how do you tell the male from the female flowers?

Beautiful photo! I took mine with a cell phone, should use a camera next time.
I inspected my tree today. I could see about 50% male and 50% female flowers. The flowers appear on this year grows and the females are closer to the tips of the branches while the males are more at the base.

I'd like to grow persimmon in zone 6, Any variety to recommend? I used to order fuyu tree online, but the package was left under sun, and the bareroot is only very little root. So the poor tree didn't survive. I prefer some local source, but can't find them in Low's and Homedepot.

@greenfig, you can clearly see the makes from the female flowers with the link you posted. Some varieties don't make any male flowers. These varieties bear seedless fruit.

@jimmychao, fuyu will grow in New Jersey but not as cold hardy and early as other varieties, you can try ichi Kei jiro or the Korean varieties should do very well. I grow about 15 varieties.

Interesting to read all about other fruiting trees besides figs.  I may be relocating to the Port St. Lucie area in Florida, and suddenly, the possibility of growing many more exotic-type fruit trees is now in play.  I can't even imagine what it must be like to have a growing season that lasts more than three months!  I'm still nursing 40-50 "Sea Grape" seedlings that I had sown two years ago.  I love this tree, but now, if I move to Florida, my little seedlings would be considered weeds.  I'm still taking the kids with me.

Chocolate Persimmons.....ummmmmm?

EDIT:  My figs trees are going to Florida with me also....but sadly, not my dog.  Gino will continue to live with my sister.  My heart is breaking.

Bass,
Does your orchard open to public? Would like to buy some trees.
