a surprise for me today

I was out looking at the fig plants.
The desert king which I obtained from Adriano last year has had two main crop figs on since about mid june. They have always looked like they would fall off at any moment, always a bit rubbery to the  touch.
Today, looking at them, I thought, geese that one has gotten a lot bigger.
I gave it a little squeeze, it was soft and it split, revealing pinkish flesh inside and some seeds. I ate it. taste was mild not very figgy, and a little sweet. The other is still as soft and rubbery as ever, still looking like a strong wind will knock it off.
As the  plant was obtainded from Adriano, I am pretty sure it is a Desert King, but surprised that at this late date it gives a ripe main crop fig.

Good surprise - at least you got to eat it. I found the critter that was eating my ripe but not fully ripen figs -- none other than the pet hound. This morning I found a few not fully, partially eaten Barbillone on the lawn. Negronne had just the fig stem left & so did the huge Brooklyn Wht. This new dog sure is smart. He uses the garden table to climb & pick the figs. He has also ate all the lower branch ripe DK figs this season. I used to have a Bassett Hound that eat fruits and now this pet Rhod. hound is a new competitor. All pot grown figs are targets unless its moved beyond the fenced backyard.

If it is a DK, then it is a breba. I doubt you will find fig wasp in Z5. Hope you find more good surprises.

That is what I  thought, DK breba only, but these two figs grew on this years wood. So I posted pic of plant, for leaf identification.

Grant this does happen some years. Rarely but it can happen where a main crop desert king fig will ripen. I had a few last year at Adriano's and they tasted quite good. My desert king ripened 2 main crop figs last summer aswell but the rest all fell off. My father's tree as well last summer ripened 2 or 3 my plant is from forestfarm in oregon my dad's was purchased on kijiji. This year all main crop figs dropping like flies.

Thanks Nelson.
I thought I had read that DK on rare occasions will ripen main without wasp.
Do the leaves look like DK?
Or do I plan on getting another DK?

Here is pic of same plant in mid july.

Grant,

Same thing has been happening to me this summer. My DK has a lot of main crop figs on it.  I've been waiting for them to drop, but instead they are turning yellow and drooping.  They are yellow on the inside too.  They are sweet but not very rich.  They are staying on the chewy side and not really getting that soft.
