AAAAhhhhhhh.......bad News

So. Sorry! How old is it? I would write the company and show them the pictures, it wouldn't hurt.

The suggestion for a "lean to" type greenhouse would be a good idea if you can fit it next to the house.

Let us know what you are considering replacing it with so people can help you on the forum and let you know if the company(s) you are looking at are good GH makers, or bad GH makers.

wow. must of been quite the wind. Sorry to to see that. Hope you didn't lose any branches.

So sorry to hear about this paully.  That is just terrible to see the damage.
Hope you can rebuild to withstand the wind etc...
If you build a second or third greenhouse ( you know you will ), I wonder if anyone near you sells houses from Harnois , a Canadian gh company that has really strong greenhouses and tunnels.
Glad the temps are not severe enough to hurt the trees.

This GH does not seem to be from Harbor Freight.
What brand is it?

The green house is from Costco. It's a Palram model. Unfortunately we were having winds for the last 2 days, sometimes gust of strong winds. Well, there were a few very strong gust yesterday morning, I decided to check as I had seen it standing 45 mins ago and there it was the mangled mess. No kidding mother nature power.

Thanks guys for the kind thoughts. Will start re-building tomorrow using 2x4. Just do not want to miss all good tasting figs.

Pauly,
That's devestating. So sorry. I've had good look with my homemade hoophouse. It's just made with PVC pipe and some wood support beams. I found the plans at Mother Earth News website. I've also heard good things about the ones made with livestock panels. Glad you're ok.

What guarantee(s) came with that GH?

If it was me, I would go to costco with both them before/after pics.
Who knows, you may end up with a refund or replacement.

I have read that the (cheaper) HF GHs need re-enforcements:
(a) More clips and/or silicone-caulk for just the panels not being blown off by wind.
(b) More bracing (e.g., using electrical conduit metal pipes) for a studier frame-structure against both snow and wind.
A google search will provide more details on the subject.

I agree about contacting them Per Costco's website on the 6 by 8 that looks to be yours

  • Snow Load: 35 pounds per square foot
  • Withstands wind up to 75 miles per hour
  • Warranty:  5 Year Limited

I am so sorry to see this. I have always had good service from Costco. I hope they pull through for you. FWIW 11 years ago we had 4 feet of snow dumped on us. Many, many buildings, gymnasiums, commercial buildings, and small structures collapsed. What I found interesting was that structures made of wood survived much better than those made of metal.

awe!!! that sucks.
Return the remainings to Costco and demand refund, not replacement.

Paully, you don't strike me as someone who wants to punish the company or Costco.  But the warranty was for winds of 75 mph.  Did your gusts exceed that?  Only you would know that.

I see you building that greenhouse stronger!  You will re-use the panels with a better, stronger frame.  It's all about the bones!  It has been mentioned here that wood framework stands up better than metal.

I, along with everyone else here, feel so sad that this happened to you.

But you did state that you can't fight Mother Nature, and this is true.  For those in high fire zones, earthquake zones, hurricane zones, flood zones, not much you can do.  Rebuild.

I look at your horrible destruction, but I see beyond.  OMG!  Your figs do need protection from that huge snow covered mountain!  It has to be bbbbbbbrrrrrrrrr cold there!

Keep us posted!

Suzi

Sorry to see all that damage and hope the rebuild goes quickly. I have the 6x10 harbor freight greenhouse and so far it's doing well. I did reinforce the panels with silicone and it has had a lot of snow on it with no mishaps.

How horrible.  Tell them they have to replace all 50 Maltese Beauties, Falcons and other rare and valuable figs.  Hopefully Costco will honor their warrantee.

The warranty for this greenhouse is here:

http://www.palramapplications.com/octave-clear-glazing/

Basically it states once you buy it you are on  your own unless it is a manufactoring defect.

Sorry to see this happen to you Paul.
Hope you build a bigger, better and stronger one. You deserve the best.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about this. This winter has been rough for just about everyone. And we have another "polar vortex" on the way next week.

Sorry Pauly to see such terrible thing happening. I hope it can be put back.
Partly good news is that you are not in deadly cold zone for the figs and most of the the figs will be OK.

Wow - that is amazing damage!  So sorry!  Once it started to let go it must have just peeled apart.  At least your plants look amazingly OK.  Would a section or two of stockade fencing to the North-East side help break the wind without blocking much light?  You could leave the posts in the ground and only put them up in the winter to break the wind.  Good luck rebuilding!

Hey Paully by coincidence I bought the same greenhouse at BJs, we are building it out tomorrow! I hope mine lasts....

on my honeymoon, we were at paris. they have this huge green house/conservatory. all covered with glass. i was thinking.. what it it hales here?

Paully, my heart goes out to you! Wow! Your GH size look similar to mine. I have to ask, did you install a base for the GH? How did you secure your GH to the base?

I created a base out of 4x4 pressure treated post bolted together. And I used 36" rebar spaced 2 feet apart all around the GH. And I used "U" nails to secure the rebar to the base. Mine has survived major storms. I'm talking storms that can pick up a 4 burner BBQ grill with a full propane tank and throw it 15 feet! The same storm did snap off my pop-up window from my GH. I fixed the window and today keep the window shut using rope, bungee cords and cylinder blocks.

@ Dennis, the green house base was firmly anchored to treated 4x6. The rest were not secured with any other material. It was build as per instructions from handout that came with packaging. From the destruction view point, I should have brace the structure with wood. It seems a strong gust hit, likely blew in or blew off the panels & ripped out the entire roof. I have got pic's for Costco. It is less than a yr old. Not sure what they will think. I will rebuild & lesson learn is best to shore-up or support with wood. Don't trust the support rods.

 Hello Paully,
Sorry to see what happened to your GH. Mine so less than a year old and has done well this winter. I would suggest reading this web site before rebuilding as it helped me with a lot of improvements for here on the northeast coast. hfgh10x12.blogspot.web
