Abebereira rooting question

How difficult is to root the Abebereira??
I had 2 nice looking cuttings. Put one in the moss and another into a baggie with some other varieties. They just ignored me completely :(
The rest of the cuttings already have several leaves and lots of roots while the Abebereira just plays dead.
Is there any special trick with it?
It seems I lost them this year but want to try again the next one.

What is your experience with Abebereira?

I'm having the same problem with Abebereira. I didn't have any problems with the other Portugese cuttings.

Mine rooted nicely and has made it to the 1 gallon pot outside in the hoop house.  Used the same method as I do for other which is 70/30 perlite/soil.  This variety puts out huge beginner leaves for me.

I had 2 cuttings started in Feb 2, 2013. Both are slow to grow but doing just fine otherwise. One of them only put out about 2 inches of growth so far. Both have rooted and now in 1 gal pots. I use about 50/50 or 60/40 perlite/compost.

Ok, so I had a fluke then, will try some other Portuguese figs with a better luck

I had my camera phone on me, so I took a shot of mine a few minutes ago.

Hmmm... looking good! Congratulations and thanks for a photo!

Frank, you said you use "70/30 perlite/soil" but I see a lot of bark in the pot. Is that in addition to 100% or it is only on the top to keep the mix moist?

Sorry...that mix was while in the 18oz clear cup.

  • I rooted the cutting in sphagnum moss
  • Transferred to 18oz clear cup with 70/30 mix
  • When almost root-bound, transferred to 1 gallon pot with 5:1:1 mix (pine bark fines/perlite/sp. peat moss)

I see! I use a different mix, approx. 3:1:1:2 (pine bark fines/perlite/potting mix/compost) in my 1 gal pots. The compost is about 1 year old and is well done. I added some to my young in the ground avocado a month ago and it looks like the tree on drugs. It gained about 2 feet since than (on top of 4)! The compost also comes with a heavy load of worms!

Wow.  Since this is my first year growing figs from cuttings, I don't know what to expect with the mix I have.  I do like the consistency, but we'll see how the plants like it after this year.
