About 5 More Months

This is for some of the newer members to see as i posted these before, since then the membership on forum has expanded.

Well i was looking thru folder for some pictures of my fig trees to post on ebay with scion and ran across these one.

Although last season i started bringing trees in and out of garage in mid March as i like to get a jump start on things when weather is nice here by me it can change as you can see the dates in pictures. Late March and early April more snow.
Anyways its not even winter yet and already i miss looking at the trees daily nice and green in my yard, drinking coffee, taking pictures  and so forth.

Yes, Martin, 5 months. I had my plants brought up to the garage at the end of March last spring because the cold store temperature was around 50F~55F from the winter temps of 45F~48F.
The good news is that by the end of today it will be two days less than 5 months.

Couple weeks ago I sent some of you a pic with snow on the ground at Donners Pass in California.
That day I witnessed all four seasons in one day.

And the night before that,
Ever wonder what it feels like to be hit with a 60 mph cross wind while pulling a 53' trailer? My shoulders were sore that night.

So Martin,
I'm starting to see Winter a bit too early this year.
Just got home so I will be bringing in the large trees soon.

Akram,
next week it will be one week less for the five months. I love it!

Debating in whether or not to start the cuttings now or wait another month.

Rafed, do you start cuttings in winter?  How do you keep your cuttings at the correct heated temperature?  Do you have greenhouse?

Rafed that 4 seasons weather reminds me of years back when we took the kids trick or treating. It was mild that day till cold front blew in sunny, rain sleet then end of eve it was snowing.

Rafed i never drove a big truck , but early in my working days i recall sitting on elevated structure high off ground stopped on very windy day in Chicago cause of backup of trains i was driving a 2 car train each car 50 ft moderate load of passengers and the train car had good movement side to side, kind of got to me early i was a rookie,  we are so high up and when you look out cab window you dont see the rails just the long way down.

I recall as a child rideing them with mother and grandmother who went downtown to her job as a seemstress,  mom would gently bump up against me as we were rounding the big curve at polk street and say hope we dont tip, i was relieved 30 seconds later as we went down the hill and made it to ground level. God only new years later i would be driving them trains around that exact place that still exist today.
I probably should have kept a journal and wrote about my experiences with the Chicago Rapid Transportation System ( The EL Train ) man i might have made some money with the things i had happened to me and saw as well for almost 30 years. I saw all walks of folks good and extreme bad as well as death right before me .

I have seen many a trucks especially on 1-80 which your familar with jack knifed in winter season and always think about your job and what you do a hazard each time you get in your cab .
Be safe this coming winter in your journey's.
Life is short.

Godspeed, Rafed, in all your travels.  :)

hello Martin --  good way to rush winter. Good that we have no frost or artic cold winds yet. I know it will come but for now, I am glad I am not rush into winterising my plants. Five months seems to be a long time. I wish tomorrow is late spring. Please keep motivating us to put winter behind.

It's going to be 90+ here tomorrow...just trying to warm you all up!
Sue

I know the Accuweather long range forecast for those of you up north was for a harder winter.   I feel for you.    According to them, we are to have a milder winter this year, down in the southerly areas.

I'm making the most of it that I can, as well.    I'm simply pretending that it's summer, and getting outside to work.   :oP   Keeps me sane.

My goal is to try to accomplish one outdoor chore per day, so we don't get slammed again this spring.   One of the main projects is to build a greenhouse, having it ready to go at least by early seeding time.   But I would really love to get it done sooner, so I can raise some winter veggies and store plants somewhere else than on my floor.   I probably need to go up on the hill and find some lumber that will make end walls.   But this morning I've got to finish transplanting a bunch of gooseberry bushes.

Rain sprang up in the forecast last night after I came in.   That came out of nowhere!

Thanks  Vivian.

Martin,
I never been on a train. We might be riding in rockets soon the way things are looking.

Dennis,
I will start with the baggie/moss first till there are a few half inch or so roots and place in cups with mix or moss. Must poke many many holes for air to circulate.

I use a deep ( 18" to 20" deep ) clear storage container for a mini greenhouse. I cut three or four pieces of 1" pvc pipe and cut to shape the drop ceiling light cover ( mesh type ) and zip tie the pvc pipes onto it.

I place the mesh light cover inside the container with the pipes in the bottom side. Fill with about half inch of water ( for moisture/humidity ) and then place the cupped cuttings in the container and cover at night.
I only have it uncovered for a couple hours a day.

Sit back and relax and watch them cuttings take shape.

I did learn this in the figs4fun website and credit Jon ( The GodFather ) for this.

Hello Rafed, I am familiar with Jon's method.  I use it.  However, this part of you comment confuses me.....I cut three or four pieces of 1" pvc pipe and cut to shape the drop ceiling light cover ( mesh type ) and zip tie the pvc pipes onto it.  I place the mesh light cover inside the container with the pipes in the bottom side.
I just place those pretty clear stones in the bottom of my minigreenhouse and vent the top of the lids.  You must have a very warm place where you start your cuttings!  In winter, we keep our house between 65 and 68 degrees.  Last year was the first time I used a heat pad with tremendous results.  The secret is not to place the container directly on the pad.  Mine came with a bracket (yeah, I got the largest heat pad). I can place 2 of those bins on one pad and I don't use a thermostat.  Thought about it though.  cheers.

Dennis,

The container is approx 30" long and approx 20" wide and deep.
I would cut the 1" pvc pipe ( 4 each ) at approx. 29" long.
I would cut the drop ceiling cover to fit the inside bottom of the container.
I would zip tie the pipes onto the mesh cover on both opposite ends and two in the middle.

If you can wait till later the evening then I will be happy to add pics so you can see what it is I'm talking about.

Have to step out for now.

Rafed
I do a lot of short cuts and so in this case I place the drop ceiling cover directly on the bottom on the container (no legs so stable) which keeps the pots 1/4" above the bottom. I believe there is enough moisture from the containers so I do not add extra water other than the little run off from the pots.

Ok.  thanks Rafed.  cheers,

This season i said i will start no more cuttings in house mainly cause of gnats last time. Then i got the itch as i wanted to duplicate some of my plants for various reason.
So that went right out the window, i get bored and well just like to experiment with things along with my favorite watching the fig plants grow.
It always has and still fascinates me when they first sprout those itsy bitsy tiny leaves as the just beautiful to me.
Anyways i use a big clear bin with removeable top and when i move it from laundry room it just goes under my model train table which has a grow light attached to the structure under it.
So far no problem and im going to buy the mosquito dunks to dissolve in water just in case as it has the same stuff the gnatrol has in it but less expensive.
When im outdoors this season taking care of the snow this should help the winter dreary cold as steel on ice mostly sunless days here as i admire the plants hopefully.

Dennis,

Looks like I left the thing in the back shed and it's too dark outside to look for it.
I will post it in the morning,

Sorry
