I currently have a Lattarula cutting that I was able to get some roots on. I potted it up into a quart container last week and the roots are growing well. The cutting had 3 nodes on it and I buried two as that is the area where the roots were forming. The cutting had one node above the soil line where there is a bud that I have been watching green up. The problem that I have is, I think that it is a baby fig growing at this point and not a leaf. I don't know if I should remove it, or leave it, but I am worried because I don't see anywhere else for a bud to form to produce leaves. I don't know what to do, please help! Peace, Chad

keep it on until it's big enough you can safely remove it. give it time.. if it still doesn't put on the leaves, wait till it need water and bottom feed very weak fertilizer to see if that helps.

When you make it sure it is a fruit, do remove it!
your cutting may produce a shoot or a leaf at the same node adjacent to what you believe might be a fruit.
If not there, your cutting may decide to produce shoot from one burried node.
It happened this winter to three of my cuttings, unfortunatelly I was impatient with one, and up-rooted it to discover long white in color shoot.
The shock was too great and cutting failed after re-potting.
The other two I did not disturb are growing quite nicely for now.

Watch as that grows and as it does you will see it take on either a somewhat pointy tip or round form tip.
Since perhaps your first experience leave it until your absolutely sure and if still not post pictures
at that time .

Pointy end expresses a shoot round end expresses a fig embryo.

As already been said:
The general rule is that shoot/stem/leaf-buds are of the 'pointed' kind (like a cone),
whereas fruit-buds are of a much 'rounded' shape - becoming more pronounced as the bud grows.
Fruit buds should always be removed from rooting fig twigs, as they an enormous
(natural) mother/offspring energy sink hole; stealing (twig-stored energy) from a
more then required/essential root/leaf development.

I had 1-2 occasions that I did keep a fruit bud on a well rooted twig b/c
it was a pure-unknown and I wanted to have a possible fruit sneak-preview...

Thanks for all of the replies. I confirmed that it was a baby fig and removed it with a razor blade. Man, that was hard to do as it was the only green on the cutting. Hope to see a leaf bud in the near future, fingers crossed. Bullet, I just took down a left hand brewing co. Russian imperial stout that measured in at 10.2 percent to calm the nerves,lol. Happy st. Can smokva, you were correct. After I removed the baby fig I noticed some swelling right next to the wound. Seems to be starting a bud and the roots are still growing. Feelin good about it now. Thanks again for all the advice guys.
