Mike,

Happy you enjoyed your breakfast!  Where was the ham/bacon, and that English muffin or bagel and the cream or kraft cheese?

:-))  Suzi

I can hardly wait till next year when I can torture fruit-less people too. ;)

Suzi,
To me there are few perfect foods. Fresh figs, hot ripe peaches, Esopus Spitzenberg Apples, apple pie, cherry cobbler, persimmon cobbler . . .
Why ruin with inferior companion foods.
I make, btw, the finest carrot cake ever tasted by any god or mortal living or dead. It must be eaten with coffee that's roasted on the spot and mixed with cream right out of the teat of a Dexter cow.
And thx, yes I did enjoy it. My last HC. My first year of MLS - and boy do I love that variety.

I got one to root and it's growing well. I think it even has a figlet growing. What especially do you like about it?

Gina,
I'm so sorry. I hope next year you have so many figs you'll have to compost half of them.
I add a lot of pictures on f4f when I have figs to post as I really appreciate being able to search f4f for pictures of figs I have not seen and although these won't show up in a search I have posted pictures of them so they are available. Not trying to torture you, seriously. Just happy I still have figs to eat.

Gina,
It's such a refreshing and clean flavor. It's like drinking ice cold honey water on an August day in the south. It's subtle yet --- it's just such a cute fig, I just love them.
It's a really pretty fig, not showing off at all.

Mike,

I'd like your recipe for carrot cake.  PM me with it.  My coffee bean roaster almost burned the house down, so we kicked it to the curb.  I get Costco beans, and I have a Grind and Brew, and the cream is (don't listen) Fat free half and half from Ralphs AKA Krogers.

Suzi

Cuttings I'll share - even plants. Any info I have on figs, etc. but my carrot cake recipe? . . . sorry. Took me 25 years to perfect and it takes all friggin day to get it right. I will tell you this - you replace the normal ground carrots with carrot pulp from a good juicer and the carrot juice is replaced by dark molasses. There is no such thing as too many walnuts and shortening must never be used instead of butter.
If, when done, the cake isn't as heavy as a confederate cannon ball you have done something wrong.
cheers,
mgg

I roast my coffee beans with a heat gun.  Works great.  MLS?  Malta late sugar?

Bob, I hope you're kidding. Mary Lane Seedless. Old dry air popcorn poppers from the eighties work great and can be found at garage sales for $1.

Mike, I'm curious which fig is which in your photo.  Hardy Chicago seems obvious but the others I'm not too sure.  Thanks!

Steve
P.S. I obviously need to pay you a visit soon to get a sample!

I was teasing you ...somewhat. ;)  I love looking at all the photos of ripe figs - they are a great aid in figuring out which ones to want. But I also would like to have some ripe ones here for us to enjoy. And that's just a matter of time.  I think there is one fig outside that is swelling and softening as I type...

Thanks for the info on Mary Lane Seedless. I might have to make an airlayer of the one I have. The original was very difficult to root - bad FMV.

Steve,
They are in the order that they are labeled, i.e. from L to R, HC, WP, Con. and MLS.

Gina,
I could not get the ones I bought from encanto this year to root. My tree from 07 however has never shown any signs of FMV. Not saying it's FMV free but so far I've not seen any. If you want a few cuttings PM me. I've promised most already but I can get you 2 or 3 nice fresh ones full of life. Just need to wait til I scarf down all the figs.

Encanto was the source of mine too. Fortunately I have a green thumb and was able to get one of 5 to root. It is now doing well, but not quite as vigorous as other figs I started at the same time. Here is the thread I started about it:

If you have extra cuttings, I'd love to give a more healthy one a try. Thanks.

I started out by modding a popcorn popper but the heat gun lets me roast bigger batches.  I've tried the Fresh Roast and a small drum roaster but the heat gun has the most flexibility.  Sweetmarias rules!  Check out their green offerings and their library.  It explains the heat gun method in detail.  If you buy something there please tell him I sent you.

I got one of my 3 MLS  cuttings from Jon to root and almost lost it when I lost the Smiths.  MLS came back almost immediately.  Can't wait to taste it  :)

Bob,
I had a few this am along with a few W Paradisios. MLS rocks big time for me this year anyway.

I didn't have a lot of luck with encanto Marseilles VS (black) either - tried 3 or 4 and got one and had one struggle to put out a leaf for 6 months til it finally went tits up. But Peter's Honey, Atreano, and Vista were 100%.

I can't wait to taste the big smith's I bought this year. Next year will be a big deal for me as I added a lot of figs that should produce next year for the first time.

Dang figs are just the best!!

Oh yeah, Bob, btw - I have figs on that Bastinka Purple that I'm hoping didn't come out too late. There's a bunch of them. Hopefully they will ripen so we can see them.

My MLS

Bob,
Nice MLS. Mine is now down to maybe 15 figs left - rats.
