As you all know birds love to eat delicious figs, last year there was 13 figs and it turned into 4 edible ones! (One fell of, a few rotted and some were eaten by birds). Do you have any ideas how I could stop them without bags?
Cats
I can't unfortunately, only Un alive things
Do you have many trees scattered around, or a few clustered together? How about a rigid scaffold over the tree(s)? You could easily make a rigid rectangular or looped over structure with PVC pipes and wrap bird netting around it, maybe clothespin shut a netting door when you want to harvest. I was inspired to make one a couple weekends ago for a couple rows of fruit trees. It's not the most beautiful example, but it should get the job done. I tightened wire loops at regular intervals along the PVC to secure the bird netting when it's fruiting season.
Hmmmmm, it's only one 3 foot tree, I was wondering if they didn't like some kind of herb
Catnip is a herb. :)
Haha
One tree! !!!!!! Someone needs to send you some cuttings fast
I have an 8 x 12 raised bed for herbs and veggies. The birds strip every new shoot as it sprouts. The netting worked, but it was a pain to erect and then try to work through, so this year I am trying something a bit different. A dancing wind-sock. Amazon has a pretty sturdy model for businesses that carries a retail price of $339.99 with the blower included; but they always have a $40 coupon in the ad. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CPPOYIC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 If you keep an eye on it, they run some real deep markdowns sometimes. For instance, today their sale is for $199 plus the discount of $40 with the coupon. A few days ago, they marked it down to $60; so, with the coupon, I got the thing for $20, delivered free with AmazonPrime.
Hi likeo,Are you feeding birds ? Do you have bushes that they feed on ?The idea is to remove those honey pots so that the birds fly away.On the fig trees, remove all half eaten figs. Don't let the birds think that they can feed in your yard.
a small dog in the yard will end the bird problem fast. My little beagle also takes care of squirrels, rabbits and assorted other common garden pests that like to eat figs, blueberries, etc. Besides being fun to have around, he is worth his upkeep protecting all my fruit and berries.
My dog does the opposite. He will eat any ripe figs, blackberries, strawberries, as well as any bushbeans or broccoli heads. Make sure if you get a dog, he is not a vegan...
Thats the way to go, Blue!! I was gonna suggest the cracked pepper, cinnomon, garlic mist but with that huge thing, you will surely scare those little buggers off XD Lol, Figgysid! My Dalmation did the SAME thing! And, she ate a few rocks to boot!
Only one solution, grow enough figs to account for the loss. Anything else is useless.
Isons nursery (and others) sell bird tape ( reflective tape)...or you can grow a nice green fig like JH Adriatic. Sorry about the planting restrictions.
Yeah, it is a greenish yellow fig, it's very confusing
