This is from my (Rob's?) Genovese Nero.  I did the air layer on a 2 year old tree from a 5 gallon SIP.  Just 24 days from start to finish!  The roots were pretty fragile, and I guess I should've left it another week or two so the roots would toughen up some more, but we'll see what happens.

That's great, Frank! Your video inspired me to set a bunch too. I have them on Preto, It 258, Black Madeira, and Genovese Nero. I hope they are as successful as yours. How do you like the Rob's GN, by the way?

Thanks Richie.

Gary,
I haven't tried Rob's GN yet, but it has been a very vigorous grower.  There are a bunch of figs on it and they're very large to be in the stagnant phase.  These should be huge when they ripen.

Very neat!

BTW, did you girdle?  I tried two air layers last year without girdling and got nothing.  I tried the same two this year and have lots of nice developing roots.

I googled 'gif maker' and got this site:  http://gifmaker.me/
Rather than posting several pics of the root ball, a gif was the better experience.  So easy, I will probably do more of these gifs.

Thanks!  I did not girdle because it was a completely green stem.  I've found that it's not necessary in my experience.  If the wood was hardened, I would girdle.

Hey Frank, Outstanding job, my friend! Love the way you did the photos! You have made it look so easy, I am going to do some air layers myself! It's not too late is it? Thanks so much for, the great Information, you always post! : )

Thank you, Frank.  I thought I was done air layering, but I went ahead and started 5 more today on another tree.  ;)
I think you'd be just fine starting air layers now.  Assuming they're ready by early September, that should be enough time for them to adapt before dormancy.  I appreciate the kind words!

Hi Figgyfrank,
When the tree wants it, rooting can be achieved fast. But on a green stem, that was really fast .
Until the end of august one can airlayer the fig trees as they are still actively growing and seeking nutrients.

Eli,
Actually, I've never used rooting hormone.  It's simply Pro-Mix BX.  It must be the variety because other air layers take 4-6 weeks on average.

Once you put the air layer on (peat, coco, whatever) and assuming the medium is wet, do you ever have to wet it again?
The roots look so nice and healthy. I am surprised that the clear plastic had no ill effects it seems. Some pple wrap with foil and I'm not sure why?

I never wet it again. You should definitely cover with foil, otherwise it will certainly dry out. The vid doesn't show it, but it was wrapped with foil. You should still check the moisture every so often just in case.

Frank thats a lovely looking layer, I had no luck with RGN. I tried rooting twice and had good luck with rooting, however they wilted and dried off completely after transplant. I wont give up, will try again.
Thanks a lot for sharing

Thanks Vinny.  Despite the fragile roots, this air layer never wilted and continues to grow strong today.  I hope you have better luck next time.  It is vigorous otherwise.

I showed this to my Dad to explain what air layering was, and he got excited. He knows the process as marcotting. Back on the family farm they would air layer mangoes, citrus, sapote.

This evening he was looking at my figs, explaining how he would air layer them. He was amused by the newfangled use of plastic and foil; back then it was loamy soil and coconut husks.

That's great!  So much easier and more rewarding than raising a cutting.  The best part is that you don't even need a bottle.  Just fill a plastic bag with soil and wrap a trunk.  :)

That's funny, my Dad more or less said the same thing. I've started rooting cuttings for the first time, and when I showed them to him he said it would be much easier to marcot the trees I already have. No matter what he'll always be a farmer at heart.

No secrets, Chuck.  I use Pro-Mix BX but just about anything will work as long as it retains moisture.  Peat moss or sphagnum peat works well too.  I did my air layers on green growth, so I did not score the branch or use any rooting hormones.  Now for hardened wood, I will either score the bark or peel the cambium layer away (about 1" worth).

24 days is pretty commendable! What area do you live such that they are able to root that fast? I did a Persian Lime tree back in May and it was still a good 35-45 days before I considered it well rooted enough to take off.
As to the tin foil, I use it on my potting mix layers too to keep the sun off and reflect heat. What do you think about wrapping black plastic nursery pots with it for the same reason, which I would think would keep the root zone cooler. I read recently about a grower in Arizona doing this (sometimes with bubble wrap) for her potted blueberries.

bahamadan,

24 days is rare.  95% of my air layers take about 6 weeks.  This particular variety just likes to grow.  ;)  I've only done 1 air layer on this tree, so I don't know if I'd get the same results next time.
I've heard about wrapping or spray painting pots a lighter color and I hear it helps keep it cooler.
